Hmm, interesting. In the first video they tell that King Ramkhamhaeng's wife Noppaman started the tradition in Sukthothai in year 800 A.D. I just wonder who made this video as Sukthothai existed 1238-1438 as an independent kingdom and Ramkhamhaeng ruled between 1279 - 1298.
Whatever, this is the best Thai festival in my opinion.

It's Remembrance Day and Veterans Day as well today. Give some thought to the men and women lost to war as part of your festivities this evening.
.....They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old,
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
We will remember them........

The proper function of man is to live, not to exist. I shall not waste my days in trying to prolong them. I shall use my time.

My Loy Krathong
Several years ago I vowed never to visit Khao Tao for Loy Krathong again. On my last visit, the traffic was the worst I’ve known in Thailand. The road from Hua Hin was mainly one lane in each direction. The Thais made that single carriageway into a 3 lane highway going South, with the occasional important Thai creating a 4th lane South. There were fatalities on the road that night, and it scared the hell out of me. When we got there, parking was nigh on impossible, although we managed, and the place was packed, like I’ve never known before. OK, when we eventually got to the action areas, it was beautiful.
This year, both my son and daughter-in-law were working, and we couldn’t go anywhere until at least 10:30pm. I thought the Khao Tao mayhem would be over, and we could nip down.
We set out at 10:30pm, and I was surprised at how many motorcycles were on the road travelling South. As we approached the Khao Tao turn-off, there was a slight queue, but nothing to complain about. We found roadside parking just before the railway crossing, and walked.
There is a lovely new pavement to the lake, but it has been constructed Thai style, and when you have a nickname like Big Boy, it wasn’t always easy to use.
When we eventually arrived at the Walking Street part of the event, it was just like my last Loy Krathong, plenty of stalls, and quite colourful. Very busy in places also.
We’d already bought our own eco-friendly Krathongs, although there were plenty for sale.
We got to the pier where Krathongs could be launched from. There was a strange tank image in colourful lights at the end, which baffled me somewhat.
Krathongs launched, we wandered a little bit taking photos of the decorations and colourful temple like building that has been built in the lake to house a statue of the last King.
Mrs BB bought some bugs to eat in the car on the way home, and that was Loy Krathong for another year.
Khao Tao is back on my list of possibilities for future years.

Nice pics, BB, as usual. I was detailed to take the gang there last night. The traffic queue was horrendous but when we eventually arrived there was plenty of parking in the temple. My gang and grandchildren went one way and I went the other and settled in a little restaurant away from the madness. The 'Loft Indy Kitchen' where the food seemed good and I could sit with a gin and tonic and await my call to duty. "Call me when you're done!"
I was just 3 mins from the car. They were happy doing their thing and I was happy doing mine.
The two or three accidents we had to navigate around were the usual shunts. Even in slow moving traffic, the locals are hell bent on being as close to the car in front as possible. I do not understand that mentality.

Did you understand the tank at the end of the pier?
