The rarest baseball play happened yesterday
The rarest baseball play happened yesterday
Triple plays (TP) are rare, happening on average 5 times a year. Unassisted TPs are extraordinarily rare, with 15 in the history of the league. The rarest type of TP last occurred in 1912. As Deadspin put it:
Triple plays are always cool, but the best instances are the ones that leave everyone—fielders, runners, fans, broadcasters—kind of confused about what exactly just happened. Last night’s Angels-Rangers game gave us one of those.

It's the only sport I hear the results on the tv news and I can't make out who won and who lost

What is fun to watch is with runners on base the guy at bat hits into the outfield, the runners all decide that the ball is not going to be caught and all take off. But a catch is made and now they are all turning and running back down the basepaths to get to where they started.

Baseball can be pretty crazy sometimes.
Minor league baseball is nuts, man. The Burlington Bees had already bled two runs to the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers in the bottom of the ninth of Friday’s Class-A game, but they still had two outs and two strikes against batter Nic Pierre with the bases loaded. The Timber Rattlers’ left fielder struck out—and his team still won.
Watching the wild pitch from Bees pitcher James Ziemba may lead to discomfort; watching the inaccurate throw to first by catcher Keinner Pina may lead to a verbal “Ohhh noooo.”

I dont understand you say with 2 outs the batter struck out--well that ends the innings.

I did not say that, it was taken from the article.oakdale160 wrote: ↑Sun Aug 19, 2018 10:32 am I dont understand you say with 2 outs the batter struck out--well that ends the innings.

Not if the catcher doesn't catch the pitch in certain situations:oakdale160 wrote: ↑Sun Aug 19, 2018 10:32 am I dont understand you say with 2 outs the batter struck out--well that ends the innings.
On an uncaught third strike with (1) no runner on first base, or (2) with a runner on first base and two outs, the batter immediately becomes a runner. The strike is called, but the umpire does not call the batter out. The umpire may also signal that there is "no catch" of the pitch.
The batter may then attempt to reach first base and must be tagged or forced out. With two outs and the bases loaded, the catcher who fails to catch the third strike may, upon picking up the ball, step on home plate for a force-out or make a throw to any other base in an effort to force out a runner.
An “uncaught” strike includes not only pitches dropped by the catcher, but also pitches that hit the ground before the catcher attempts to catch it.

Re: The rarest baseball play happened yesterday
One type of triple play has either never happened, or it wasn't documented, or there is no evidence to support someone who said it did.
The 3 outs would happen without a fielder touching the ball.
It starts with players on first and second.
Batter hits a high fly ball, on a trajectory to land in the infield.
Both runners head for the next base.
The player from first base becomes Out #1 by passing the player from second.
The batted ball hits the player from second. That's interference, so he's Out #2.
The umpire rules the batted ball was an 'Infield Fly'*. Out #3.
* You need too much additional baseball knowledge (8 links from the Wikipedia page) to understand a short explanation.

Re: The rarest baseball play happened yesterday
Can I ask another question? 2 outs, runner on third. Batter hits into outfield, it is fielded and he throws to first where a play is made--BUT the runner from 3rd crosses the plate before the out is made at first--Does he score?

Easier to understand because you probably grew up with cricket and possibly played the game. For someone, me, never exposed to cricket it makes no sense at all.arcadianagain wrote: ↑Sat Aug 18, 2018 8:55 pm Intrigued, I read the explanation, and finished up more confused than ever. Re: The rarest baseball play happened yesterday
Actually, an even more rare play occurred yesterday:
With bases loaded in the bottom of the 10th inning of the Dodgers-Mariners game, LA pitcher Dylan Floro balked in the winning run.
