Strange incident on the road last night
Strange incident on the road last night
A friend and myself were driving home late last night around 2am from one of the bars on soi 88 As we passed the orchid palms resort next to palm bistro restaurant, the road was blocked off with a few scattered chairs and other items, there was no car there, but as we slowed down a thai man rushed out from the side of the road, to us it looked like it was intentionally blocked off so he could car jack the car. We quickly manouevered around the objects and as we passed the thai guy he punched the side of our pick up truck, i am sure we were in full view of the security there as well.
Very strange incident, may be the items had just fallen off a truck, and the man was trying to pick them up, or maybe a bit more sinister!

Dear Jingjoe,
we have security cameras in the area and at the front of the developments and the restaurant, i will be certain to look into this and will let you and of course the police know if we see anything unto-ward.
we were passing the area at midnight and there was nothing there then.
Kind Regards
The Palm Bistro.

^^^
thanks for that, will be interested on the outcome, i talked to my friend this morning and he was 100% sure it was an attempted robbery of some sort, he said it loked like the thai was pretty upset that we hadn't stopped

Re: strange incident last night
Quite possibly something sinister like a car jacking attempt.
Something else to consider is getting blamed for an accident that's not your fault. I wouldn't stop at any location with debris in the road or anything that looks to be a road traffic accident or somebody trying to flag me down.
I know a couple of people that have been blamed including a forum member try proving you wasn't there with the language barrier.

That's a worry!
On raising this with my wife she says its been known that scooters have been jacked with a similar scenario in Hua Hin... riders knocked off, losing their scooter.
I'm glad our car doors lock automatically as we drive off and we got a top front/rear dashcam.

Re: Strange incident on the road last night
some months ago, riding my m/b, a m/b passed me at high speed on the inside, hit a parked m/b and took a horrible tumble into parked m/bs. Back home I would have stopped to help, not here.
Re: Strange incident on the road last night
That scenario certainly sounds sinister to me, especially as the guy in question punched your truck when you didn't stop.
As for helping people, like Oakdale, I would never do it in Thailand as a foreigner stands a reasonable chance of getting blamed for something he/she didn't do. Case in point; I was driving on the highway between Hua Hin and Pranburi and there was a big monkey just standing in the road in front of me. I honked to make him move and he ran across the road directly in front of a Thai woman going the other way on a motorbike. Her front tire hit him dead center and she went tumbling. I really wanted to stop to see if she needed help but was afraid to as it could have caused me big trouble. I did slow down and watch in my mirror as she got up and walked back to her bike so I think she was only scratched up a bit. The monkey ran away into the bush so I guess it was ok too.

My brain is like an Internet browser; 12 tabs are open and 5 of them are not responding, there's a GIF playing in an endless loop,... and where is that annoying music coming from?

You only need to look for Peace and Smile from the Thais when in Thailand after it is hard to receive. Peace...

ah yes, the eternal myth of "Peace and Smiles."
Re: Strange incident on the road last night
Our local taxi had an incident going home up Soi 112 late at night a few weeks ago, without any provocation two guys on a motorbike came in the opposite direction and threw a beer bottle through his driver side window breaking it and then drove off into the night?
So be careful when you are driving out there in the early hours.

There is a lot of anger out there, but the anger is confused and undirected. Foreign visitors can be the target not because we are hateful, just that we can be an easy target for this random anger. Their leaders (i use the word laughingly) are failing them again, but they have never known well run government and expect little from them. It might get worse.

HI
Nothing on the cameras that we can see as they don't reach further out than the development road access, however we have been incontact with the police who have said they will visit the area more frequently at night in case of something more suspicious.

Yep, good move not stopping.
Ive always been cautious around any accidents in Thailand when holidaying there quite a few years ago I was in a taxi we were turning from Sukumwit into a Soi that leads to the back of Bungradgrad hospital in Bkk. The taxi bumper bar hit another car while he was turning, they stopped in the middle of the rd to talk, I immediately gave the taxi driver the fare on the meter with a tip, got out and walked up to the hospital. I was not staying around being a "farlung" I would be blamed somehow.
Cheers Malzy

Re: Strange incident on the road last night
Personally, I wouldn't stop either for anything (apart from the cops), especially at that time.
However, it's possible that you could be damned either way, stop or not. If it's an accident, I think there is a law that requires motorists to stop an assist at the scene of an accident here in Thailand and technically you can be prosecuted if you don't. Not sure how enforced it is (like the rest of them) but I think it actually exists here. I still wouldn't stop, just leave it for the meat-wagon "Rescue" collection service to deal with. Not suggesting anyone stops but just mentioning it.
These days, you just have no idea of who you are dealing with and even the most unlikely types of people pop at the oddest time or things.
I too, would have immediately thought it to be a robbery attempt as people are so desperate for money and don't want to earn it now.
