Re: Rip Off Hua Hin
Years ago, on a road trip up North, FIL told me to stop at a roadside restaurant (can't remember the place name) which had a car wash attached.
This car wash had a high ramp, which I had to put the car on!
I asked FIL why the ramp and he just touched his nose sagely and my wife translated that into "just watch"
While we had a snack (the fourth that day) a couple of lads got under the car with a pressure washer jet and proceeded to blast away, getting soaked in the process!
Then they did the top of the car, washing with soapy water and drying it with chamois. Then I was asked to move the car under an awning, where they then applied polish to the whole car and gave it a perfect shine. They even applied blacking to all the tyre walls, including the one in the case, hanging off the back.
This was back in 2003 and the total price was Baht 120. Well worth it. The food was good too.

I've lost my mind and I am making no effort to find it.

Anywhere you don't see a price in English - assume an attempt will be made.

Bag of pineapple with 25 written on it at the market I assume 25 Bt. Petrol station with 26.25 91 sign I assume I am getting fuel for 26.25 Bt. Length of steel with 480 written on it I assume 480 Bt. Pretty sure I pay the same for a big mac as anyone else. Yes you need to negotiate on many things and it is not unique to this culture. Try buying a carpet in Dubai. Simply KNOW the value of the product you want and make your decision to buy based on what you are happy with paying.

No because my value perceptions are based on living most of my life in the United States. Yes anything with numbers on it I get that, it's when you have to ask what the price is, then chances are it will get jacked-up.crazy88 wrote:Deep Blue wrote

The liberal use of terms such as rip-off, profiteering, greed, wrong, 'no justification' are appropriate for expat's countries of origin. But, it's like we're now living in a whole different culture and stuff. When in Rome...

Everything selling in America has a price on it because we have mandatory item pricing laws and unlike here, there’s no dual pricing system done by the government that encourages Thais to do the same thing in their small businesses. America has a billion laws for everything, this would come under Federal Trade Commission’s Bureau of Consumer Protection, probably 250,000 employees and a budget of 500 billion, LOL and then you have individual states different laws.dundrillin wrote:And that does not happen in the states?Deep Blue wrote:No because my value perceptions are based on living most of my life in the United States.
