championship football

Post by lindosfan1 »

The season has kicked off and I thought it would be good to have a Championship football thread, This league is closer than the Premiership, and I know several members support championship teams.
Big boy will support Plymouth who drew 2-2 Saturday.
I support Palace who drew 1-1 with Watford Saturday, they always seem to cause us problems.
Who do you think will be promoted who will be relegated.
Comments please.

Quite an open league again this season so very difficult to predict the three promoted teams.
Top 6 I would say.....not in any particular order.
QPR,Birmingham,Reading,Crystal Palace,Ipswich,Wolves.
Outside bet:Nottingham Forest.

Bottom 6,in no particular order.
Southampton,Barnsley,Burnley,Blackpool,Derby,Norwich.

But not a huge difference in quality between top and bottom.

Despite our manager's promise at the end of last season that Plymouth would definitely get promoted this season (he's said it, and did it twice before), I together with the vast majority of fans think it will be a very tough season.

He's had a hell of a lot of problems trying to persuade players and their wives to the end of the world. However, there has been a late spate of signings, and as a scratch side (one of the team only signed Saturday morning, and 2 had been signed within 3 days ofthe kick off) did suprisingly well against one of favourites.

Sturrock has always been known as being a shrewd player in the transfer market, and I'm sure some of the late dealing was to get a better deal.

He's only failed to win promotion with one team in the English league - Southampton. They booted him out after a couple of months, and look where that moment of inspiration landed them.

Will he fulfil his promise this year? Only time will tell.

Bad day for Palace lost away to Preston. I still think Palace will at least be in the play offs. We have new signings to bed in yet. Also Palace always seem to start the saeson slowly one year we were in the bottom 3 in November and got promoted. This is still a difficult leage to call at the moment.

Championship management have lost complete touch with reality in their search for Premier League football.

In the local rag, Argyle's manager explains the difficulties he is having attracting players to Plymouth. Players are being paid up to £17.5K per week by some Championship teams to play reserve team football - complete madness. When a break in to 1st team football is suggested, they want a suitable reward for that promotion.

How many of these teams are going to fail in their bid for glory, and then go bust? My team stand a very good chance of being relegated this season, but at least they'll have a team next season, regardless of what league they will be playing in.

How can 2nd rate teams afford such wages for players that can't even make it in to the first team? The answer is simple, unless they have a sugar daddy chairman, they can't.

Big boy you are absolutely right the wages being paid to footballers now is ridiculous Palace badly need a striker if we do not get one in 2 days I can see the season being our worst for a long time.

As the tranfer window closed my team moved to 24th (rock bottom - some may call it Spurs) in the Championship. Good old Luggy managed to secure a decent team on during the last few days leading up to the deadline for a song. A week to settle the team down, and now we're 5th challenging the leaders.

As I said, the lure of the Premiership is causing management to lose touch with reality. Yes, Luggy sold his stars at the end of last season for millions. He's totally re-built for under a million.

These players (or their agents) overprice themselves. Luckily for Plymouth they made a killing. As the transfer window closes, some of these players realise that they will be without a team - enter Luggy to grab the bargains.

The only flaw with Luggy's method is that you have to play the first 6 matches with a crap team - soon rectified once you've built your team. How many £1M+ players are playing in the Championship? How many of them are playing below Plymouth in the league?

I think this confirms my orinal statement,

How many of these high spending Championship teams will be in financial difficulties by the end of the season?

Iagree with you Palace spent very little, but look where we are in the table. but only a few points from the play off places to the bottom of the table, again this year it will be very interesting as it develops.

Great to find a forum that goes beyond the Prem. Though of course next year I hope not to "qualify" for posting in a Championship thread :D
Please don't point out our current position - I know where it is

No way!!!!!! I can't stand that game. I'm originally from England, but have been in NZ since my family shifted here in 1974.
QPR is the family team, & no matter how low they've gone I have to follow them. It's like a genetic disease lol
