Just finished watching First Man. HD streaming available on Afdah.

Good not great. Should have been spectacular with the story to work with. Poor director. Casting was shocking, almost every role a poor choice. Soundtrack completely forgettable. Travelling through space making first landing on the moon, you'd have thunk an appropriately dramatic orchestral soundtrack would have made the cut - instead it was minimal and bland.

Worth watching definitely but I was underwhelmed. Really looked forward to this one.

American Hangman

Really really good courtroom drama not set in a courtroom. Donald Sutherland is his usual excellent self in this 'trial by social media' movie. A troubled guy kidnaps two people and puts them on trial asking the general public (streaming the video) for the 'guilty/not guilty' verdict.

The trailer is below but I recommend not watching it as it gives away large bits of the movie.

Series coming in March on Amazon.

IMDB says "A high-concept thriller and coming-of-age drama, Hanna follows the journey of an extraordinary young girl raised in the forest, as she evades the relentless pursuit of an off-book CIA agent and tries to unearth the truth behind who she is."

A revenge thriller, elevated by the performance of the title character, played by Saoirse Ronan (7 nominations for lead and supporting roles combined from Oscar, Golden Globe and BAFTA ). Other characters are well realized, essential for the viewers caring about their fates.

16 year old Hanna and her father, Erik, are just another family living off the land in an isolated cabin near the arctic circle while Erik schools Hanna in the killing arts. She, a willowy slip of a girl, eventually can best dad in hand to hand combat. He tells her she's ready, then places an analog era portable signal transmitter in front of her. When she's ready, she flips the switch. Erik and Hanna depart on their missions. The Agency on the other end of the transmitter mobilizes to kill both of them.

Kate Blanchette plays the character running the operation. She's deliciously ice cold, single-mindedly intent on winning this high stakes situation - and even better with fear and disbelief when things doesn't go as planned.

To build interest in Hanna, Amazon ran the trailer as a Super Bowl commercial, then dropped the first episode after the game ended. Piratebay soon had copies.

The Jinx: The life and deaths of Robert Durst.

Compelling 6 part real life mini series based around 3 ‘murders’ linked to the heir of a New York real estate fortune.

The suspect, Robert Durst, is suspected of 3 murders, the first over 30 years ago. He has yet to be proven guilty of any of the murders.

He gives real life interviews to the series director as he tells his own version of events of the 3 incidents.

It’s great viewing and an insight into his very strange personality. For those fans of Making a Murder, this is a must watch, the outcome as the stories unravel is astonishing.

Bad Times at the El Royale

Truth in titling. It all happens at the El Royale hotel. Much of it is bad. Calling it a violent drama / mystery sort of describes it.

Comparing a film, director or screenplay to something by Quentin Tarantino is usually about how the wanna-be missed the mark. Not so in this film. The Director/Writer had several influences, including writing on a TV series designed to both keep you off balance from what just happened, while challenging you to anticipate what will happen next. Also wrote on 2 series and a film for Joss Weadon, a writer / director known for creating and writing believable characters that form group bonds greater than the sum of the parts.

This reviewer sums up the film better than I could:

If anything, the final product feels like a cross between the aesthetic of Quentin Tarantino, with the morality and snappy dialogue of the Coen Bros. In fact, Bad Times At The El Royale is firmly set at the crossroads of those two sensibilities, sewn together with Drew Goddard's eye for direction and storytelling. Trust me when I tell you that if you think you've got this film pegged, you don't. This movie is something altogether different from what you think it is, and it's all the better for it.

As if writing one hell of a narrative wasn't enough, Drew Goddard gave us some of the best characters to hang around with in 2018 in Bad Times At The El Royale. There's actually no character who falls flat, or simply becomes a stock background figure, with all involved having their moment in the sun.

It also helps that Goddard wrote these characters, he also chose one hell of a cast to play them. ...

Never have my eyes been so tightly fixed to a screen. Never has my attention been stolen from me for so long. Never have I journeyed so far in a film.

Midsommar

A masterpiece. Watch it. Feel it. Let it take you on a trip.
