A Remarkable New Football Team

Post by klikster »

I saw something remarkable on one of the TV news channels a few minutes ago, maybe CNN.

A women's football team from Afghanistan is touring in Europe and playing "friendly" matches. The young women are wearing scarves but they are showing their faces .. and speaking out proudly in interviews.

Out of fear for their lives, they practice at a military base in Kandahar. Their coach is European.

I feel quite differently about the US involvement in Afghanistan than in Iraq. I always thought it was justified. When I see those young Afghan women playing football in Germany, it strengthens my feelings.

You go girls! :D

Pretty simple, the US sponsored military element overthrew the Taliban which had essentially enslaved, and continues to threaten, the women of Afghanistan. These women are now experiencing a level of freedom their mother couldn't even have dreamed about.

That's all I will say on the matter as this thread is about an Afghan soccer team, not about politics. Too bad you didn't comment on what is really important.

You say your post was not about politics - it was about a womans football team? Read your post again - nothing about who played centre half, who scored the goals, results etc. Plenty about .... politics though! You did answer my question however so :thumb: thanks for that.

klikster,

Do you know who they are playing against? Are they playing local ladies teams across Europe, or is it a propaganda thing with them playing various forces teams?

A good friend of mine brought the first Afghani cricket team over to England about 3 years ago. To the best of my memory, they played a couple of county sides.
I'll find the relevant UK news article - if anyone's interested.
And BB, I would imagine that I could find out the details of your question.

That information was not addressed in the NEWS report. Maybe you are the one who should read my post .. and please stop trying to bait me into a political argument ..

It was a sort of profile piece, mostly about the team and some interviews with the girls, who were very proud of what they were doing and quite excited about seeing life outside Afghanistan.

They did show some footage of a game in Germany .. which the announcer said they won. The opposition team was uniformed, but didn't look too professional.

klikster,

I seem to remember reading that you are American. Please don't take this wrong way, and apologies if you are not.

Uniformed in the UK tends to refer to Army, Navy or Air Force personnel, whereas in America I believe it can refer to a team's kit.

Therefore, could you please explain what you mean by uniformed? I hope that you can see that your description is quite critical to understanding your answer to my question.

Apologies not necessary.

Your original post stated "I feel quite differently about the US involvement in Afghanistan than in Iraq. I always thought it was justified. When I see those young Afghan women playing football in Germany, it strengthens my feelings. "

That was not the NEWS REPORT that was YOUR WORDS You obviously don't think these words are political. Most others would think different.
