Beckham

Post by PeteC »

What, no comments about the new 250 million $ boy? I thought this place would be buzzing about that by now.

My only comment is that north american soccer tried it back in the 80's with the New York Cosmos when they had Pele and some other famous names on board. It didn't work. I hope the audience is more mature and interested now and this one will work. We'll see.

I was reading that the ground where he's going to play only holds about 37,000 (if I remember correctly), so his salary won't be coming from gate receipts. About half of it will, the rest being made up from sponsorship, profit sharing etc.
Also, it was interesting to note that there's a cap on players' salaries in the USA, however one player per team is allowed to earn more then this - Beckham in this instance.
There were a number of English and Italian clubs interested. I can understand his not wanting to return to England, but as Pete has said, quite what he's going to add to the American game is debatable. Pele, George Best, Rodney Marsh et al couldn't do it before, although interest over there in the game may be higher than it was in those days.
At the end of the day, there's always the money. I might even think about coming out of retirement for that, although my agent's received no offers - yet

Best they can say about him is that he's a very good dead ball kicker. Nice but soccer is mostly a running game with a moving ball.
He's well past his sell-by date and his wife even longer past hers.

But his job isn't football any more, is it? Real only wanted him to sell shirts and that was several years ago. Man U had the best of him but he has never been a dominanting, man-you-have-to-stop player. Pretty face and he was lucky enough to hit the androgyne metrosexual wave.
Wish it had been me! :cuss:

Since his wife is in a 'football' family, I don't think off thread (much) to ask what has happened to the other 3 Spice Girls? Fame and fortune or down & out? Pete

There were 4 others, Pete, or weren't you counting Geri Halliwell (who has incidentally made the most of herself!)? I think they're all still going, but no huge hits. The most exposure Emma Bunton gets is on reruns of "Absolutely Fabulous"! :offtopic:

Hopefully, they'll use it for some singing lessons

Hmm.... but is there enough to complete the course?

Apologies for being a bit off topic, but its better than being a bit off key :?

For those of us in the States that don't follow or understand or care about sock-her, please answer this question "Who is Beckman and why did LA pay him $250m?" He was on the telly tonight raving about his fried Tom Cruise. Once again "Why?"

Hans.

David Beckham was a talented sock-her player and as someone wrote above, earned his money playing sock-her for Manchester United. His price tag has always been way over the top because of his alternative sales potential. He models anything from expensive sunglasses to Pepsi. His wife is a has been pop star popular for about two years with child audiences.

Thew $250 million paid I just do not believe. This is creative journalism adding every factor possible into the equation including the Pepsi deal and probably some yet untapped US deals. I doubt very much if Real Madrid get a bankers draft for that amount. If they did it means they will be able to purchase a completely new team of superstars. We will see how much they actually do spend.

I have not got a clue what fried Tom Cruise has to do with it . I guess they met at a party somewhere and hit it of or had a 4 way orgy or something like that. Both of the Beckham's come across as possibly swinging both ways.

According to this morning's news, fried Tom Cruise is going in to the real estate business to help them find a home to live in. Obviously the movie business must be on the decline at the moment.

Little Tommy Cruise is little. He's small, overweight and a total idiot.
Now then, a real star like Beckham. His persona shines out of somewhere. David's worth every cent.

OK, totally off thread, but I've just got to ask - is Tom Cruise deep or shallow fried? It makes a difference to the culinary experience, so I'm afraid I need a definitive answer...
