Sausage Roll Thread (split from Nanys thread)

Post by Dannie Boy »

Make your own - Makro sell frozen puff pastry and you should be able to conjure up some form of sausage meat - I make them quite often

Yes indeed, as I started to do when Nanys' offering deteriorated.

Pork mince, very finely diced fatty bacon, a small red onion the same, a little crushed fennel seeds. A friend says they're better than the rolls another friend's wife makes and she's a chef. :D Recipe can be posted if requested!

I use the Makro puff pastry strips not the sheets, laying out four together which makes it easy to cut into small rolls after baking, a bit larger than mouth-sized. Lovely.

For sausage rolls there are several other options. However, for most other Farang foods, IMHO Nanys has got the market in Hua Hin.

The alternative is go native, and stop having little treats from the homeland. This is something I'm doing more and more.

Having said that, the sausage rolls are made in house, so no govt involvement in price rises as far as I can see. We seem to have a record of prices being 33฿, 50฿ and now 60฿. That is an 81% increase in very short time, when the country claims inflation is negative. Of course, maybe sausage rolls were a loss leader to get people through the doors.

Big Boy wrote: Wed May 14, 2025 2:03 pmMy gripe is something made from local ingredients, manufactured in the shop - how do they justify an 81% price hike in such a short time (20% for me, because I'm fairly new to their sausage rolls)? It does sound excessive.
Are they manufactured in the shop?

Like you, I am new to them, so 100 baht was the price for 2. They are still better priced than one other I know. And the price of pork has gone up, as recorded elsewhere. And as stated, it's an occassional treat, I'd rather pay the new price rather than they stop making them. Obviously, there is a limit to what I would be preapred to pay.

I bought a sausage roll in Bkk receently, that was also very nice. A single roll of a similar size cost 100 baht.

You should try a T&M Sausage Roll. 99฿, but I'm picking some up tomorrow. I'll post a photo - these should be used as the yardstick for value - great taste as well. So big, they could almost be a yardstick

Do you have a link please? I've checked Shopee, searching 'Gregg's Sausage Rolls 427g' and 'Sausage Rolls', but couldn't find them.

Monster sausage rolls, with each one being a meal in itself. Pound for pound, the best value in town IMHO :munch:

My intention this time was to get my son on the job to make them, but they are football food, and with us attending our 2nd semi-final in 2 weeks this weekend, and probably a cup final on the 31st, time beat us. Next time though. :D

But price wise, they must be about the same as Nany's, at 2 for 120 baht.

No, there is such an overlap on a Nany's sausage roll, even if you cut the T&M sausage roll in half; and probably double the sausage. No comparison.

The big difference is Nanys is always available off the shelf. T&Ms need to be ordered.

Eh? From memory, the Nany's sausage rolls must be equal to five and a half inches each, surely?

LOL - you've got me wondering now. Problem is, how do we check? You are right, they were quite large, but are they 5.5"? Normally, I'd have bought one just to check, but I've just bought 10 T&M monster rolls. What I have no doubt about though is the amount of filling - no way Nanys can compete with quantity or flavour. I think T&Ms must make their own filling - its unlike any I've tasted before. Of course, as with all sausage, we all have our own preferences.
