Looking for Jelutong wood

Post by Big Boy »

I have a friend who lives in Ubon Ratchathani, who does a lot of wood carving for a local Buddhist Temple. He is looking for a particular kind of wood called Jelutong, which he describes as, "The nearest equivalent I've found to European Lime wood."

Does anybody have any knowledge of this wood/where he might find some? He doesn't deal in the kind of cut wood that you'd find in a wood merchant - more a fallen tree trunk. He would nornally be looking for a fairly sizeable piece of wood.

Here's an example of the kind of thing he normally works with.

I'm trying to figure out that statue. To me it looks like a mix between Buddhism and Christianity.

Pete, it looks like his interpretation of the goddess Quan Yin.

Doing a Google search on the pic results in mostly Vietnamese Facebook pages. So maybe Vietnamese depiction of Quan The Am (Quan Yin among other spellings).

Truly zero offence, but IMHO painting natural wood (especially carvings) simply destroys it. You're covering the beauty of the natural grain and the wood itself.

It is unusual, but not unheard of painting his carvings.

The caption that accompanies the above carving is:
