I can remember when this was one of the prime annual events of the sporting calendar, but these days it hardly gets a mention!!

Indeed, I saw a snippet on the news this afternoon, but zip of it to the run-up. As a kid it was a major event as was the Varsity Match in rugby. I missed loads due to overseas travel, but these events certainly seemed to have died a death.Dannie Boy wrote: ↑Sun Mar 26, 2023 3:29 pm I can remember when this was one of the prime annual events of the sporting calendar, but these days it hardly gets a mention!!

Do remember one of the "boats" sinking in one race - will have to look that one up!

It was in 1978. I'm surprised you remember it, Pietro, you can't have been long out of nappies!

Oh, I was a youngster, but my Old Man was a big fan and I remember watching it with him - being 1978, it was probably the first one I ever watched (having been living in Africa upto '77). TV was quite the experience then - "English TV" only available for a couple of hours in Zambia/SA at the time (The Sweeney dubbed into Afrikaans was a must see!!!).dtaai-maai wrote: ↑Mon Mar 27, 2023 6:36 pmIt was in 1978. Blimey! What's "You're nicked, my son" in Afrikaans?
I remember seeing The Avengers dubbed into French when I was on an exchange trip back in the early 70s. The French title was Chapeau Melon et Bottes de Cuir - Bowler Hat and Leather Boots...

"Jy's geknip, my seun" apparently! Probably not the same without the Cockney accent!
