Driving: why Thai’s “back in”?
Re: Driving: why Thai’s “back in”?
Here is an interesting point for the reverse parkers out there. I've been in two car parks in Hua Hin this morning and both of them had a one way system with parking bays angled into the traffic flow, so are you suggesting I'm supposed to reverse back through about 130 degrees to park?

Damned if I have ever seen any angled parking in Hua Hin. It is the best way to arrange parking bays, as you have much better vision reversing out from nose in. Most streets in Thailand are far too narrow to allow angle parking, so it will only work in off street places.STEVE G wrote: ↑Tue Jan 24, 2023 12:31 pm Here is an interesting point for the reverse parkers out there. And as for reversing in, there is a place in Australia where it is the law to reverse in to angle park. But the street is wide enough to permit it. In fact, it is that wide that there is parking down the middle of it.

There’s a similar setup in the road next to the old shopping Mall which has angled parking, but similar to your car parks, it’s a one way street and it’s that narrow that it would be impossible to reverse park - but being one-way it’s also less dangerous than in two-way traffic, to reverse out.STEVE G wrote:Here is an interesting point for the reverse parkers out there. The test in Gibraltar done by the army which also included a 'commentary' while driving. It was probably more difficult than one done by the regular MOT bods. When was this - BC or AD ? Not part of my test 35 odd years ago and not part of tests my nephew has taken - for that matter, the LHG had to take one when she came to the UK as her Chinese license wasn't accepted (long term).
Took mine in a long wheelbase landrover without synchromesh gears. Who remembers 'double declutching' when changing down?
I learned in the British Army in 1973, again, in a L/R with no synchromesh and it was double de-clutch up and down! We had to parallel park uphill, which was nice. If I had ever 'nosey parked' in NI it would have cost me

The smallish Lotus' next to Vana Nava has angled parking.

I always roll back into the curb, especially if road built properly. Always easier to roll back into, than out of curbside. Less time being idle on the roadway also.
Re: Driving: why Thai’s “back in”?
Agreed. If it's angled toward you then it's designed for forward entry to the bay. Reverse the arrows on the road and it would be angled away from you designed then to reverse into the bay with an easy exit forward into the traffic. Thai Watsadu is such a carpark but I can't remember if the bays are angled towards you or away.STEVE G wrote: ↑Tue Jan 24, 2023 12:31 pm Here is an interesting point for the reverse parkers out there. It depends on which way you enter - I always approach from the HH direction (having done a u-turn if coming from Cha Am) and then I proceed towards the shop entrance, so the parking is on my right and the bays are angled towards you.HHTel wrote: ↑Tue Jan 24, 2023 4:06 pmAgreed. Re: Driving: why Thai’s “back in”?
It is a simple premise, it is far safer to drive forward into traffic flow than to reverse into it, even in low flow car parking if it is an option.
Re: Driving: why Thai’s “back in”?
They are angled but on many of them if no one is parked in front you can drive through.

Thai Watsadu can hardly be compared with places like MV carpark.

I don’t think anybody was comparing TW with MV, simply stating that it had angled parking.

About 20 years ago, next door to my drive was a lorry obstructing my view, I pulled slowly out to before I could see up the road a car came along and hit my car. The police were called and i was told that if I had reversed out I would have been prosecuted,, the other driver got fined. Because you see it on google it dos not make correct. Reversing was part of the test, when I passed.
Basically it is common sense to reverse in.
Woke up this morning breathing that's a good start to the day.

After you rob the store, it's quicker to get away if you've reversed in.
