Have 'other banks' ATMs started charging a fee?

Post by Big Boy »

I noticed today that I'd been charged 10฿ for using a non-Kasikorn ATM this morning - a machine I have been using regularly since the start of Covid with no charge. Actually, checking back, I was charged last week as well. Also, when I was in Buriram, I couldn't find a Kasikorn ATM. and I see I was charged 20฿.

It used to be that if an ATM was going to charge you extra, you would be notified before continuing the transaction. Not any more it seems.

Obviously not a huge drain on finances, but I will ensure I only use Kasikorn in future.

I'm with BKK bank and I think I've always been charged 7 baht on 'other' ATM's. I may be wrong but something's stuck in my mind. I've never been notified that there is a charge though. I draw regularly from a non BKK bank ATM and never been informed prior to drawing.

Incidentally, with BKK bank you can draw and deposit over the counter at 7/11 and Lotus (I think). Never tried that so not sure how it works.

Kasikorn used to charge, but that charge was withdrawn quite a few years back. Since the withdrawal of the charge, if I've happened across a machine that would charge, I've been warned and asked if I wanted to continue.

I've now been charged 3 times since 25th November - I'm sure they will have told me, but the message will have been in Thai. I'll just choose my ATM more carefully in future.

Just had a look at my ATM slips back to October. My account is with krungsri (KSA).

Withdrawals every week (including 2 days ago) at Makro HH, either KTB or BBK ATM - no charges.

Two withdrawals at KBank ATMs, each with 10 baht charge (at filling stations on Rama II road).

One KSA ATM in Bangkok (ie own bank, but out of area) got a 15 baht charge.

No charges at any KSA ATM in HH.

Thank you, so it looks as though they have started charging everybody. I've only used Kasikorn in Hua Hin, so it'll be interesting to see what happens outside of town/province.

You will be charged. Its why I have a Kbank account in Bkk as well as Hua Hin.

My experience with other banks ATM's, is that it is usually free to use, if you are a first time user. So I just use different banks ATM's when I can't find a Kbank. But I am never really sure of how that works.

I think you'll find you will be charged for using other banks now. I've been charged by 2 out of 2 other banks.

That matches my experience with krungsri card in Bangkok bank ATM. No charge.

LOL - just like the staff. It obviously just depends upon which ATM you use on any day then.

My guess is that certain banks have entered into and maintained reciprocal agreements with each other to allow the other banks customers to use their atm network. Other banks have either not entered into these reciprocal agreements or have not maintained the agreements over time. But I don’t really know without investigating more (going to the bank and asking ?)

I try to get even by stealing a ballpoint pen when I use the bank.

When I am in Bangkok I look for a Kasikorn ATM with cardless withdrawal, using the K-Plus App. Then there are no fees.

I'm usually charged when I use a K-bank (or other) ATM in a different province than where the account was opened.
