Pet friendly restaurants

Post by derek60 »

I keep seeing cafes/restaurants described as 'pet friendly', which seems to mean you can take your dog/cat into the eating place with you. Is this a thing only in Thailand? What do people think of this? My wife and I think it's unhygienic and will avoid these establishments...

Probably no more unhygienic than some of the customers.

Many years ago, I remember seeing a man who used to bring a baby elephant into bars in Hua Hin which used to do tricks for money!

Many of the restaurants have dogs and cats that the owners allow to roam so there would be no difference by allowing customers to bring their pets. Is it hygienic, no it isn’t, but there again much of what goes on behind the closed doors of the kitchen might be even worse - so how do you distinguish between the good and the bad? Personally, I’d continue to frequent a restaurant if I liked the food and the general ambiance and only complain or avoid it if the pets became a nuisance.

Before he sadly passed away, "Bob the Dog" would accompany us everywhere - we'd stay in "Dog Friendly" accommodation and visit "Dog Friendly" eateries.... These are abound in the UK and in no way classed or taken as "unhygienic" - our dog being cleaner (and friendlier) than the average human! That said, we wouldn't/couldn't take our pooch into an actual restaurant - it would always be the bar/pub side that served food. Personally, I see no issue with a well behaved/controlled dog being there.

Just guessing neither yourself or your wife are dog (or animal) friendly let alone lovers..... If spotting a "Dog Friendly" establishment, perhaps just don't go there.

You ought to see the rats and cockroaches having the run of the place after closing time . . . !

I was back in England last week and when I go out with my Brother and his family, we go to such places as they take the dog everywhere, she is well behaved and just sleeps under the table.
I have two dogs in Thailand but I wouldn't take them to a restaurant as they're still a bit wild!

If you are concerned about hygiene you should inspect the kitchen, a well behaved dog is not a problem.

My Jack Russell goes with me. He is very well behaved and polite, but he cannot use chopsticks, has to have a bloody spoon. Which is a bit embarrassing, as he makes all sorts of noises slurping up his soup.

Well, these two seem to be hygienic enough. But perhaps they are a married couple. :P

Hehe. The one on the right must be something like the boxers I used to have back in Singapore. They dribble a lot over the food. Must have been quite an effort to keep the dogs from eating out of the plate.
Those of us used to animals in the house don't think much of the op's post, but I will assume he doesn't have pets.

To be honest, I think the bigger problem here is not the pets of clients, nor the owners pets, the problem is when restaurants do nothing to deter stray dogs. The problem being you don't know how healthy they are or what nasties they may be carrying.

One place I no longer go to, with different staff running the place, seem to tolerate such dogs, whereas before, they didn't. The dogs are not in any way aggressive, but it's not nice when they hang around at your feet waiting for food, or as recently happened to me, when I was eating, came between my friggin' legs as I was about to take a mouthful of Pad Kra Pao! That really was a WTF monent, seeing this pooch looking up at me with pleading eyes, having muscled my legs aside! My shocked reaction saw the dog retreat very quickly.

My other half will walk out of a place if cats aren't controlled, even having ordered. She gives short shrift to anywhere ignoring her complaint.

When I say I tolerate pets in pet-friendly places, I am of the opinion that these places allow said pets into the premises but also expect them to be reasonably restrained.
I, too, do not like pets hanging around the dinner table (the boxers and all later pets were trained to not bother anyone during meals). I have also been to someone's place where they had cats, and the bl*#!!y things were trying to climb onto the table and to share your meal. This is totally unacceptable and I would walk out too.
I don't like cats but tolerate other people's in those people's houses as long as they are well behaved. I also note that the condition of the furniture in most cat lovers homes show signs of feline activity which is why they will never be welcome in my house.

I won't eat at a venue that has pets in it, especially cats. Definitely not a fan of cat, anytime, anywhere.

Animals & food, a big NO, unless on the plate to be eaten.
