Trip to Krabi - transport options

Post by 2dandan »

I am thinking of doing a trip to Krabi and then onto Phi Phi island for a couple of days and would appreciate any comments on transport options to Krabi.

Air Asia are doing flights from DM to Krabi. This would entail a 3 hour trip to BKK, 2 hours check in and about 1 hour flight. Possibly 1 hour to leave airport and get to Krabi. 7 hours in total.

Google maps shows that it is a relatively straight drive from HH to Krabi and the quickest route takes 7 hours 12 mins. Is it worth driving or is it a boring slog.

Not bottomed out train journeys yet but Surat Thani and Thung song are listed as locations to leave the train and get the bus to Krabi. A night sleeper might be a good option but if a day journey is it worth taking for sightseeing. Think the trains take about 9.5 hours.

What do you think?

A few years ago my son and his partner took the night bus from HH to Krabi and said it was ok - I believe it takes about 9-10 hours.

We drove, and stopped off ak Khao Sok for a night, and went out on to the lake the next morning which was quite an experience, and broke up the drive nicely.

Update…….We decided on taking the train. Booking was made online with baolau.com which was a clear and easy process. Tickets are not released until about 14/30 days prior travel and a passport number is required during the booking process. Tickets are quite cheap.

We booked to 2038 2nd class a/c sleeper. Beds were already made up and turned out to be quite comfortable. Spotlessly clean linen. The journey down to Surat Thani was ok and the guard agreed to wake us up although we were wakened before our arrival at approx 5am.

There were no taxis at the station but a tout/worker? helped by phoning one for us. A good quality taxi turned up soon thereafter and took us to Krabi on a 2.5 hour journey which cost 2500 baht for 4 people. We booked him to come back for us 4 days later as Krabi taxi drivers are charging 3000 baht for the journey back to Surat Thani.

At Krabi we booked the speedboat at the Marina Pier and it was 900 baht for the 1 hour crossing. Our return speedboat was booked online using the above website. I recommend doing this as the boat was full. A bottle of water is provided on boarding both vessels.

4 days later a large minibus with a different driver was waiting to pick us up at the Marina Pier. He took us back to Surat Thani where we grabbed a meal at a restaurant (with the station entrance at your back walk to your left and it was the larger 2nd restaurant we used). Food and drink were cheap and very tasty. Lots of locals using it.

Our train back to HH left at about 7pm. On this occasion we booked 2nd class fan seats. This was a mistake. The fan was squeaky all the way home. The train arrived in HH at 0430 hours which was 2 hours late I thoroughly recommend that you get a sleeper for the return journey.

Again, no taxis were waiting at the station but we had an arrangement with our tuk tuk driver to call anytime. He came good and we were heading home 15 mins later.

Overall a good trip.
