Soi 102

Post by caller »

If anyone is interested, they have finally sealed the furthest point of soi102 away from town. This has been accessible as an often very rough dirt track for some time, but not very wide in places and best avoided after rain.

But it is now wide enough for two lanes and more besides. Although the work still hasnt been fully completed. It looks like new drainage will be installed either side and it doesn't have any markings as yet. I also hope street lighting will be added at some stage.

But it's a boon for those that live at that far end and soi112 can now be avoided if heading into town.

I first visited soi102 when Hua Hin Laguna was being developed and it's all there was once you crossed the railway line and the road, if I recall correctly, was unsealed. I recall it was all just untended land, fields and trees - and it seemed so far from town! Such a change in such a short period of time. Or maybe my memory is playing tricks with me?

I think my first visit to Soi 102 was in the early noughties. Some friends had bought a bungalow on an estate at what must have been the far end of 102 as it was then. Like you, I remember getting across the railway crossing and wondering where we were going. Wasteland, with the occasional cow. The road was similar standard to Isaan dirt tracks, and no street lights. Our friends ran a bar, and there's no way I'd have wanted to go along that track after midnight - after 7pm would have been chancing it.

I remember going up Hin Lek Fai a few days later, and taking a photo of where Hua Hin sort of ended (I think it's Soi 94), with not much beyond, although looking at that photo today (sorry, I'm probably the world's worst photographer) I'm finding it difficult to recognise much inland of the coastal strip.

Actually, whilst reminiscing, on that same holiday, I remember going to visit some friends who lived up Soi 10 (Hua Hin Hospital area). We got a lift most of the way, and walked the last few hundred yards. Our friends weren't home. We walked back to Petchkasem Road, where apart from the hospital, we were out in the country. I still remember Mrs BB somehow managing to flag down a passing car, because Hua Hin seemed to be miles away.

It's certainly not a long Soi, unless Google maps is not accurate.

You're looking at the alley, not the Soi.

Google has a problem then. Search was for "soi 102 Hua Hin" Did it 3 times as I thought something was wrong with the size of it. What I posted came up all 3 times.

Google Maps is fine here :D. You are a long way from Soi 102 (maybe 120 or 122?). The common feature is Soi 95, which is well out of town.

I heard that the new"drain" is the start of a short cut to Burma for the new submarines.

It is certainly big enough! :thumb:

Images captured by google in 2017 show that the road was only sealed until just after the school. And most of that is crumbling. That's the latest offering google has.

A lot of new building has been put up in a short space of time since. Turn the image around to see the school.

I remember looking at a house in Baan Suk Sabai in about 2003 and at that time 102 was pretty grim, unmade or badly potholed and I seem to remember a big overgrown abandoned development down there at that time.

Soi 102 used to be a useful part of my regular cycle route out to Thap Thai and places beyond before returning via Mon Mai and going down rather than up the steeper hills. I have mixed emotions about it now being surfaced as I prefer trails to roads and it certainly was a track before well suited to my mountain bike. I know that there is a more trail orientated route which I will now have to check out as an alternative to 112 (boring) or 102.
On the bright side it will make it easier to get into Bluport from Nong Khon avoiding going through town or 88 using the new(ish) roads which cut the corner from the Nong Khon to Thap Thai road to 112. With all the estates at the far end of 102 there will be a lot of people who will use it. I wonder if the priority where the far end of 102 links to the newly paved section will change (did it ever really change).
I can understand the need for large drainage pipes as 102 as it became a river during and after heavy rainfall. Interesting on a bike or scooter but impassable in a saloon car.
All in all more evidence that Hua Hin continues to expand and develop be it for the better or worse.

We purchased up the top end of 102 in 2005 and at that time it was unmade roads and the only way we could describe how to get to our place was to look for the windmill on the farm which was now where the Silver fox bar is and then keep going towards the hills.
Somewhere back in the uk I have a video that I took and will try to find it and post it when back home.

I took some pics earlier of the end of the road that has just been sealed. My understanding is that the 200 metres or so now sealed, was previously left unfinished, as it is the responsibility of Thap Tai and not Hua Hin Muang, if that makes sense.

Anyway, the first pic is looking west, away from town. The previously unsealed area is marked by the drains that basically form a line across the road.

And this is the other end, looking East towards town. The first part of the road was always sealed and marked, but just went as far as where the dirt track began. Again, it's clear to see where the new road starts from. They have cleared a huge amount of junk away to complete this road, including rubbish that had been dumped. Before, there were only a few areas where two vehicles could pass side by side.

This next pic is from the western end of the new sealed road, looking left. The lorry is coming from soi112.

And this pic is looking straight ahead. The road where you can see the car in the distance leads to 4 housing developments and one new one being built, and not much else. At the end, you hit the road that immigration is on, which is much further North. Priority is given to the road veering right, where the bike is coming from. That leads to the new recreation area built around what I assume are old gravel pits and eventually takes you to the traffic lights at soi88, or if heading left, again to the road where immigration is located.
