Five senior police transferred over pub inferno

https://www.bangkokpost.com/thailand/ge ... ub-inferno

Authorities seek to find out how ill-fated Mountain B got away with operating illegally

CHON BURI: Five senior officers including the chief of the Phlu Ta Luang police station in Sattahip district have been transferred pending an investigation into the Mountain B pub inferno that left 15 people dead and 37 injured.

Pol Maj Gen Atthasit Kitjacharn, chief of the Chon Buri provincial police, signed the transfer order on Friday night.

The five officers have been moved to the Chon Buri provincial police operations centre. A fact-finding panel has been set up to investigate the incident. Transferred were Pol Col Wutthipong Somjai, chief of the Phlu Ta Luang station; Pol Lt Col Somsak Rooying, deputy chief responsible for crime suppression; Pol Lt Col Torwong Sakkulwong, deputy chief responsible for investigation; Pol Maj Somya Chusukpholyiem, chief inspector for crime suppression; and Pol Maj Yutthaya Songkrasan, chief inspector for investigation.

A source familiar with the decision said the transfer was linked to the illegal operation of the fire-gutted Mountain B pub, which was operating without a licence and was built in an area where entertainment venues were prohibited.

Earlier, the Sattahip district chief was transferred pending further investigations into how the building, which was licensed as a restaurant, came to be altered.

The inferno at the site on Sukhumvit Road in tambon Phlu Ta Luang erupted about 1am on Friday, when more than 100 customers were still inside.

Mountain B fire death toll rises to 16

https://thethaiger.com/news/chon-buri/m ... ises-to-16

The Mountain B tragedy continues as another person injured in the fire dies in hospital. A 23 year old man identified as Sittichai Ouilert died at Chon Buri hospital at 10.21pm yesterday, after he was caught in the fire which swept through a Chon Buri nightclub on Thursday night.

A total of 13 people died at the scene in Sattahip district and three people have since died from their injuries in hospital, according to the Chon Buri Provincial Public Health Office.

Of the 42 people injured in the fire, nine people have returned home. Of the 30 people still receiving treatment in hospital, 16 are still on ventilators to help them breathe, according to the Chon Buri Provincial Public Health Office.

The 27 year old owner of the nightclub “Sia B” was arrested and is facing charges of reckless behaviour causing death and operating a nightclub without a license.

Pattaya Provincial Court released Sia B on bail for 300,000 baht on Monday, sparking outrage among the public given the seriousness of allegations made against him. He is wearing an electronic monitoring bracelet to prevent him attempting to flee the country while he awaits for his court dates.

The exact cause of the fire it still unknown, but experts say that cheap sound absorption panels are the reason the fire became so deadly so quickly. The walls of the club were lined with flammable absorption panels which “burn as fast as paper.”

Survivors say they saw panels melting and falling on top of people as they attempted to navigate their way through the billowing smoke to the club’s single small exit at the front. Experts say non-flammable panels cost just 200 baht more each and could have potentially saved lives.

Mountain B was open without a license. The venue was registered as a restaurant, not an entertainment venue and was also open past the hours specified by law. The 552 square metre venue did not have any fire insurance, according to the Office of Insurance Commission.

Sia B’s 27 year old wife Anongnat Panprasong insists that her husband is not a villain.

Only just saw that video posted on page 1. Holy shit! I've seen some horrific video clips in my time, but that's right up there. Complete shock taken hold of people wandering aimlessly while aflame.

Brought back bad memories of the Santika Club fire which killed 66. Wasn't far down the road from me at the time. Me and the missus had actually thought about doing our new year's eve there that night but decided to go elsewhere. In a horrible coincidence, the band playing that night when the fire started was called, Burn. The videos for that were equally horrific, with dead bodies laying around and melted, shiny faces looking for help.

Horrendous, I hope the injured recover well.
I don't trust children. They're here to replace us.

18th victim of Mountain B pub fire dies at Thammasat U Hospital

https://www.thaipbsworld.com/18th-victi ... -hospital/

Another person, injured in the August 5th blaze at the Mountain B pub in Sattahip district of Chon Buri province, died yesterday (Friday) at Thammasat University Hospital, bringing the death toll to 18.

The 17-year-old victim Siriwan had been on life-support since she was admitted to the hospital after the fire, according to her elder sister.

The patient had to have her right leg amputated, due to blood poisoning, and she also suffered from pulmonary oedema, she said, adding that doctors at the hospital had tried their best to save her life, but she succumbed to her injuries yesterday.

She also said that, after the autopsy, the family will take her body back to Sattahip for a proper funeral.

It is reported that the 17th fatality was a naval pilot, based at the Sattahip naval base. He sustained severe burns, after risking his own life to help other patrons to get out of the burning pub. He died on Thursday at Siriraj Hospital in Bangkok.

Some of the severely-burned victims are still on ventilators in hospital.

The pub’s owner has been charged with, among other offences, negligence causing the deaths of other people. He is currently out on bail.

According to the representative of the pub’s owner, there were three fire exits, but they were all locked from the outside. The only entry/exit point was the front entrance.

Pub Fire in Sattahip

Post by Dannie Boy »

The pub operators need charging, but so do the officials who allowed it to operate, no doubt after receiving regular brown envelopes to turn a blind eye - but as we see so often, their punishment may be no more than transfer to another location/position!!

"According to the representative of the pub’s owner, there were three fire exits, but they were all locked from the outside. The only entry/exit point was the front entrance."

That is a major cause of the whole disaster. You see it everywhere here (and in every country including the USA) as clubs, restaurants and hotels are scared to death that people will get in without paying cover charges, and people will get out without paying their bills.

How many times have we read reports about hotel fires where people came down many flights of fire exit stairs only to find the door at the bottom locked.

At least in Thailand, a 500 baht per day security guard at each door would solve the problem. Little to pay for people's lives, and also a decade or two in jail for this particular club owner.

It is absolutely digusting that this type of thing is still going on here. It is nowhere near the first time that this has happened where exit doors are locked. The "officials" involved should be lined up against a wall and shot in the guts, and left to die a slow death. :guns:
According to the representative of the pub’s owner, there were three fire exits, but they were all locked from the outside. The only entry/exit point was the front entrance.
It is basic fire safety that all exit doors in public buildings are fitted with pressure release bar locks on the inside. They are not expensive and can be fitted with an alarm if opened.
Modern fire alarm systems can also be wired into doors with electric activated locks to open when there is a fire alarm.

And these people want submarines, and F35 fighter aircraft!

Maybe pay as you go might help, eliminating the risk of people sneaking out without paying their bills.

Yes, if you're a credit card person verify and record it when a tab is opened. If cash, pay as you go.

Here however the poor waitress will be abused and perhaps assaulted. Some wan'a-be Thai big shot would take offense and intimidate the hell out of the girl unfortunately.

Mountain B fire claims 19th life, 23 year old woman dies in hospital

https://thethaiger.com/news/chon-buri/m ... n-hospital

A 23 year old woman injured in the Mountain B nightclub fire in Chon Buri’s Sattahip district on August 5 passed away at Chon Buri hospital at 2:50am today. The fire has now claimed 19 lives and 26 people are still receiving treatment in hospital.

“Ice” went to Mountain B with her boyfriend, 30 year old Chatchai “Im” Chuenkha, who worked as a singer in the nightclub. Im died on the night of the fire. The couple have left behind a 5 year old daughter.

The young woman received one night of treatment at Queen Sirikit Hospital in Sattahip before being transferred to Chon Buri hospital. Throughout her treatment, Ice breathed with the help of a ventilator.

Ice suffered burns on “100% of her body”, which was wrapped head to toe in gauze. Ice’s situation gradually declined and in the end she died from blood poisoning and shock, said the hospital.

Ice’s mother, 54 year old Weena Insiri, wrote a heartbreaking statement on Facebook this morning…

“Even with one billion baht, without a daughter to help spend it, Mom will not find happiness. The only thing I wish for in this life is to have my daughter, the happiest thing in my life.”

Weena added that her 5 year old granddaughter Mona keeps asking when she will see her mother, which Weena described as “causing torture in her heart.”

Ice’s mother initially received 10,000 baht in compensation. She requested an extra 30,000 baht to help with her travelling to and from the hospital and for supplies for Mona. However, she was instead given an extra 10,000 baht, receiving 20,000 baht in total (US$563). Weena said the family is in big trouble now, and has no savings for Ice’s funeral.

Weena said she will file a lawsuit for damages to restore justice for her daughter Ice.

The news comes just days after a 17 year old girl injured in the fire died from her injuries in hospital.

On the night of the fire, 13 people died, and five more have since died in hospital. A total of 26 people injured in the fire are still in hospital, many with severe burns and breathing with the use of ventilators.

Warrant out for 'real owner' of Mountain B pub

https://www.bangkokpost.com/thailand/ge ... tain-b-pub

The Pattaya Court on Monday issued a warrant for the arrest of Somyos Panprasong, 55, in connection with the deadly fire at Mountain B pub in Chon Buri's Sattahip district early on Aug 5, police said.

The warrant was issued after police obtained solid evidence that Mr Somyos is in fact the owner of and investor in the pub, which was run by his son Pongsiri Panprasong, 27.
