It was the preliminary test that is given prior to seeing the doctor.

Maybe the preliminary test results were so good, there was no point continuing with a proper test.
I specifically asked for two things

a proper prescription check test and a glaucoma check

Sounds like they just gave me the latter

I can well believe that Dr P has all the technology and expertise etc to do a proper eye examination and prescription test

But for some reason I didn't get it! Image

I recall telling the receptionist this at end of appointment and she couldn't speak English or understand me properly. By this time Dr P had another patient and she wouldn't talk to him

Like I say just be very clear with Dr P himself as to what you want

That's the first time I've heard such a review. I was there this morning. His receptionists certainly speak English. He's open from 08:30 - 12:00 and 17:30 - 21:00 (I think). This morning I took a family member. Arrived at 09:30 and being a Saturday it was very busy. Nevertheless there was a one hour wait and everything done including the specs order by 11:00.
Myself, friends and family, have been using Dr. Pairat for many years. He was, initially, the only ophthalmologist in Hua Hin. Bangkok hospital used to send their patients there as they didn't have the equipment although now I believe he interacts with BKK Hospital in the hospital itself. I had replacement lenses (cataracts) done several years ago and have never looked back.
The test that colonel describes is what everyone gets before being told to sit down and wait.
Regarding costs, unlike others he doesn't focus on selling frames. If the frames you have are fine then you can just get lens replacements.
My mother from the UK has used him and her opinion is that the service is far superior to what you get in the UK.

Sorry to hear of colonel's experience but I'd recommend him to anyone.

Dr. Pairat, although very good, cannot diagnose glaucoma. I was there just before Christmas and he suspected glaucoma in one eye but couldn't say for sure. He recommended I should go to one of two retina specialists in Hua Hin. One of those is in Hua Hin 74, but I don't remember his name. The other is Dr. Sirinun who is an opthalmologist and vitreoretinal surgeon. Dr. Sirinun took a look at the retinal images produced by Dr. Pairat and said they were not sharp enough to diagnose anything. She sent me off to the eye department at HHH where they have all the eye test equipment you might need. Result - no glaucoma.

The non-glaucoma eye is another story. Yet to be resolved. Image

Dr. Sirinun shares a clinic with a gynaecologist out near HHH. When you see the number of people waiting, most of them are pregnant women and their partners.

The only problem for a farang may be language as Dr. Sirinun's English is not so good.

The clinic is opposite the Hua Hin Hospital in a set of shophouses. Easy parking alongside the building. 500 Baht for a proper check up.

Mon_Wed_ Friday: 17-00 to 19-30
Sat: 0900 to 1200

And the first thing will be the standard vision test, even though it is done by a nurse.
Strange. Dr. Arunee is a female doctor. At least she was on the occasions I've been to her clinic. Maybe she's taken on a male colleague.

Well, it was definitely a male Dr that I saw! That was about 6 months ago.

No doubt. Your eyesight would be really bad if you couldn't distinguish male/female. Image

Correct, she is the owner of the clinic and when she is too busy at HHH she has a Male (whose name I forgot) colleague who stands in for her

You can never be sure these days! Not without a squeeze test! I had a dentist recently that could not decide.

Yet 3 years ago Dr Pairat diagnosed glaucoma in one of my husband's eye and the retina imaging was very clear

The male assistant to Dr Arunee is Doctor Sagol, according to my notes from April '22

You beat me to it. I was going to say exactly the same thing.

I will be led by my own experiences and I am more than satisfied by the treatment I receive from Dr. P. My 2nd cataract op, now undertakem by the good Doctor at Bkk hospital, needed a non regular lens fitting, due to an astigmatism. He spent ages using his specialist equipment to map out the size and shape for my replacement lens.

I'm not complaining about Dr. Pairat, just pointing out that though he is a specialist in some aspects, he may not be in others.

All I can say is that Dr. Pairat suspected glaucoma in one of my eyes, based on intra optic pressure and a retinal picture, which he printed for me to take to one of two retinal specialists which he recommended. Of course it's perfectly possible that he could diagnose an obvious glaucoma developed past a certain stage but that could depend on the precision of his imaging equipment.

However in my case he wasn't able to say for sure and he very reasonably sent me to a doctor (Dr. Sirinun) specializing in retinal problems more than himself. It would be very unreasonable to expect a private ophthalmologist in Thailand (outside Bangkok) to have a full range of diagnostic equipment. Indeed Dr. Sirinun sent me to a hospital to get a full range of checks using, I think, 7 different devices (one of which I hope never to encounter again).

I would still go to see Dr. Pairat (when my present eye problem - see below - has been sorted out) for check-ups and vision tests with which I have always been very happy. I believe that he is also an excellent lens (of the eye) specialist and cataract surgeon. His eye glasses prescriptions have always been spot on.

Just to finish off. My other eye also had a problem (still does) which Dr. Pairat suspected as being Age-related Macular Degeneration (AMD), even more scary than glaucoma. Again, he couldn't be sure. Dr. Sirinun diagnosed this as being CSC (offhand I can't remember the actual full name). Apparently AMD and CSC (and other conditions) may appear very similar to basic diagnostic equipment. Dr. Sirinun sent me to Bangkok for further diagnosis using equipment unavailable in Hua Hin (neither HHH nor BH; San Paolo was not mentioned). Fortunately, unlike AMD, CSC is treatable and can even recover without treatment.

I'm very happy that we have doctors available who don't think so much of themselves that they believe they're always right without referring to someone more specialized and/or with better diagnostic equipment.
