HHTel, I think you are basically saying the same as my OP. Many of the 'old' signs mean you return to old rules i.e. limits increase in lane 1, but decrease in lanes 2 and 3 - simples (if you're a mathematician). TIT

There were several instances where the overhead speeds and road paint were almost alongside the old 90 kph.

But to be fair some of those pick-ups will be turning right, eventually. In 2 or 3 kms. You have to get in the right lane early you know. Preferably straight from whatever side soi they come out of.

This is a feeble excuse, the vast majority of them (100% of the busses) hog the outside lane because the inner ones are so smashed up they don't want to drive on them. More so on highways in the south as most of the road repair budget goes to Issan as that's where the voters (recipients of envelopes) are.

So this speed limit by lane will never work nationwide when you're constantly undertaking slower vehicles hogging the "fast" lane. Its another clear example of the "me first" attitude that makes the roads here so deadly.

Next time I'll explicitly state 'sarcasm' for those that can't recognize it.

I thought they had done away with u-turns on roads with the new 120 limit. Plus, it’s vehicles with more than 7 seats, so you’re ok.

Vehicles in the rightmost lane: minimum 100 kilometres per hour
Passenger vehicles of over 7 seats but fewer than 15 seats: maximum 100 kilometres per hour
Vehicles with more than 15 seats or weighing over 2,200 kilograms: maximum 90 kilometres per hour
Tricycles and tow trucks: maximum 65 kilometres per hour
Motorcycles: maximum 80 kilometres per hour
Motorcycles with engines of 400cc or more: maximum 100 kilometres per hour

Clearly says fewer than 7 seats.

But below that it say vehicles of over 7 seats, so in my reckoning that is 8 or more - Thailand at its most explicit!!

The Thai version enumerates the limits for various classes of vehicle including those that carry more than 7 and not more than 15 passengers. In the list, the final entry is for other vehicles that are allowed to do 120 kph - cars for 1 to 7 passengers are not explicitly mentioned and are thus implicitly included in the final entry.

But then there's this official ministry of transport graphic which shows vehicles 7 - 15 passengers limited to 100 kph. It's not complete though - eg it doesn't show buses other than school buses.

Is it any wonder that so many Thai police officers don't understand the rules of the road? Speed limit should be an easier part of the rules. What chance do us mere mortals have?

In any other country you could safely assume that the authorities realise that a number of large SUV’s are capable of carrying up to 7 people and are covered in the up to 7 seats rule for cars - here you can’t assume anything!!
