Menu/food prices rising in Thailand

I have been buying BBQ pork from one of those two shops in Cha-am for many years. It has always been 300 Baht per kilo, cut up with 2 or 3 small packets of sauce.

3 months ago it was up to 350 Baht, last week 400 Baht without any sauce! The lady that runs it knows me and I am sure that she is not ripping me off.

They may be able to buy it a bit cheaper, but judging by the prices charged in Makro I’d say they’ve probably cut their margins a bit more!!

I don't really know, but I suspect that she buys a complete dressed pig from a local farmer.

I would imagine Makro is making more profit now with those higher, higher prices, especially considering who owns it. We always try to buy locally (it helps that the closest Makro is an hour away!)

Same in the US. There was a frozen food facility full of butchered pigs. Good to know that greed knows no nationality.

Siam Makro Plc (MAKRO), the wholesale unit of the Charoen Pokphand (CP) Group, is working with the Commerce Ministry to cap the prices of over 4,000 products as Thai households struggle with rising household costs.

As the Thai economy reels from record-high inflation driven by spiking global energy and food prices, the general public and small businesses have become more vulnerable to higher costs.

With collaboration from the Commerce Ministry, the wholesaler announced that it has capped prices of essential items such as fresh food at every Makro store nationwide to help alleviate living costs.

“This project is one of our important missions,” said Siriporn Dechsingha, Makro’s Deputy Chief Corporate Communication Officer. “Restaurant operators who need to control raw material costs will not have an impact on the customer.”

In light of rising energy prices, state agencies are expected to propose various relief measures to the cabinet on Tuesday.

My go-to lemon cheesecake in Aldi went up from 59p to 75p recently. Was my first experience of this worldwide inflation on food prices everyone is talking about.

That same cheese cake would be over 3 quid in Thailand. I know I haven't been back to the UK for 3 years but I'd bet grocery prices are still cheaper there than here (especially with the likes of Aldi and Lidl). Thailand doesn't have that equivalent because CP owns the entire food market and only monopolies are allowed here.

I'm back in the states, first time in a couple years and am surprised at the increase in prices all around. Food, lodging, rental cars are all up 25-50% from when I was here last. Gas is 6.00 - 7.00 a gallon here in the suburbs, over 7.00 in the city. Of course California is not indicative of the nation.

Oh, I don't doubt. And yes, I mentioned in other threads how much cheaper I found grocery shopping to be in the UK when I returned. And it probably is still much cheaper.

It obviously depends on what you eat, but I’m pretty sure that Thailand is still a bit cheaper than the UK providing you don’t live completely on imported food. Although the likes of Aldi and Lidl are putting pressure on the other major supermarkets to keep costs down, everybody I speak to in the UK says how much things have gone up over the past 12 months and particularly the last few months, with obviously more to come with the crisis in Ukraine.

I’m heading to the UK in a couple of months so I’ll have a much better idea or how things compare once I get there.

One thing where Thailand is definitely cheaper, is eating out!!

I know an accountant that could convert that to both litres (proper ones), and Baht.

Saha lobbies ministry in bid to raise noodle prices
Saha Group, the country's biggest consumer goods conglomerate, is calling on the government to allow it to raise product prices, especially Mama instant noodles, as raw material costs continue to rise.

Boonsithi Chokwatana, the group's chairman, said yesterday Saha would like the Commerce Ministry, which supervises goods on the price control list, to allow it to hike on a gradual basis the prices of goods such as instant noodles and detergents because raw materials have significantly surged and keep rising because of the Russia-Ukraine war.

"The prices of instant noodles are allowed to increase around the world, whether it is in Japan, China or Taiwan. If we aren't allowed to raise prices, I'm afraid we cannot stay in the market," Mr Boonsithi said.
