^^ 4 cases. One in Cha-Am, three in Hua Hin. All Brits.

Cha-Am group is a couple, the wife having tested positive.

Hua Hin group, 1 male and two unspecified, all tested positive. This is actually 2 'groups' that traveled from Bangkok in two different taxis (2 pax, 1 pax). The single person may also be in Cha-Am as the report states that the taxi was arranged by a friend in Cha-Am, and only the other two are reported as staying in HH.

Both groups flew to Phukt. The first group (married couple) did the 7 day sand box. The second group stayed in Phuket hotel(s) 7 days also, though not stated whether or not sand box. Both groups flew to Bangkok before travelling to these parts.

It's hit the Thai language media now, run this through google translate :

On December 24, Mr. Sathien Charoenruen, Governor of Prachuap Khiri Khan Province, Dr. Wara Selawattanakul, Provincial Public Health Doctor (Sor. Let's share a press conference on the situation of Covid-19 of Prachuap Khiri Khan at Singkhon room, 3rd floor, City Hall. Three British tourists tested positive for COVID-19 Omicron species in Hua Hin district and another British tourist is pending the results of the confirmation. Due to the low number of pathogens transmitted for RT-PCR testing, the aforementioned tourists want to test for infection before returning to their country of origin. The patient is now being treated in a private hospital in Hua Hin District. For people who want to travel abroad, please delay. As for the NGOs that will organize the New Year's event, they are asked to use the COVID - Free Setting guidelines and to detect the infection from the participants with the ATK test kit (ATK).
There's more than the above quote on the website but they did a full press conference on it earlier today.

Kalasin pub cluster expands

https://www.bangkokpost.com/thailand/ge ... er-expands

The Omicron cluster in Kalasin appears to be expanding after local authorities diagnosed 64 more cases on Saturday.

According to one Siriraj doctor, up to 50% of all new cases in January could be of the new Covid-19 variant.

A cluster was linked to cases among staff and customers of a pub and restaurant in the northeastern province of Kalasin, which an infected married couple visited on Dec 12.

After a total of 19 musicians, waiters, waitresses and guests visiting the pub and restaurant were confirmed to have the Omicron variant on Christmas Eve, another 45 patrons were on Saturday diagnosed with Covid-19 and awaiting the result that would reveal the strain, said Aphichai Limanon, chief provincial public health officer.

In total, 61 new Covid-19 were infections recorded in Kalasin on Saturday.

So far, 64 Covid-19 infections in Kalasin are confirmed to have arisen through contact with the couple who returned from Belgium on Dec 10 and later tested positive for Omicron after the first negative RT-PCR test upon their arrival, he said.

This infection situation has prompted the province's disease control committee to begin discussing what other places that may need to be shut down.

The pub and restaurant, seen as the epicentre of the cluster, has already been shut, he said. It is unclear how many other places could be affcetd by a closure order.

The husband and wife, who were admitted to a private hospital in neighbouring Khon Kaen for treatment on Dec 18 are being closely monitored by doctors in an isolated ward, said Somsak Jangtrakul, the Khon Kaen governor.

About 100 people who shared a bus journey with the pair from Kalasin to Khon Kaen all tested negative in the first round of Covid-19 testing using rapid antigen test kits, he said.

An infectious diseases expert, meanwhile, said the Omicron variant may soon dominate new Covid-19 infections in Thailand.

Up to 50% of new cases could be be caused by the new highly transmissible variant by mid-January, said Dr Nitipat Jiarakul, chief of Siriraj Hospital's Division of Respiratory Disease and Tuberculosis Department.

By February, the number of daily new infections is projected to surge to between 10,000 and 20,000, said Dr Nitipat.

The number of severe cases, however, may be as low as 2%, as opposed to the average rate of 5% in patients infected with the previous variants Thailand, he said.

"So, it is unlikely to overwhelm the country's healthcare system as the previous variants did in past waves of Covid-19," he said.

Exact numbers would depend on how well the country deals with preventing the spread of Covid-19 during the coming New Year festival.

In Prachuap Khiri Khan, three British tourists also tested positive, with a fourth member of the group still waiting for the result of a test to confirm if he has the Omicron variant of the coronavirus, said local authorities.

Eight Covid-19 infected tourists in Krabi are also waiting for second-test confirmation, said Dr Chaiway Thongmai, chief provincial public health officer, on Saturday.

These infected tourists were among 1,616 tourists from Finland, Norway and Singapore who arrived in Krabi on direct flights between Nov 1 and Wednesday, he said.

Meanwhile, Revenue Department director-general Ekniti Nitithanprapas on Saturday said he was suffering a low fever and coughing as a result of an Covid-19 infection.

A few interesting reads from yesterday

https://www.news.com.au/national/nsw-ac ... a1e3f02c8b

Two things also reinforced from yesterday ,
get a booster shot if and as soon as you can
invest in and wear "proper masks ", if you can find them

https://edition.cnn.com/2021/12/24/heal ... index.html

probably stating what you may already know, but sometimes a bit of a wake up is useful.....

Health officials outline likely scenarios as Omicron spreads

https://www.bangkokpost.com/thailand/ge ... on-spreads

New Covid-19 infections could surge to 10,000 or even 30,000 cases a day early next year, driven by the highly contagious Omicron variant, a senior Public Health Ministry official said on Monday.

The warning was issued as the number of new Omicron cases soared five-fold, from 104 on Tuesday to 514 on Sunday.

The ministry has drawn up three possible scenarios, permanent health secretary Kiattiphum Wongrajit said.

In the best-case scenario, the country could be looking at 10,000 new patients and 70 fatalities a day as early as late January, and 15,000 new cases and 100 deaths in the second-best projection.

In the worst-case scenario, the figures could jump to 30,000 new cases and 180 deaths a day if Omicron infections quickly spike.

Graphs presented at the briefing showed the daily tally of new Omicron infections peaking in late January or early February in the best and second-best scenarios.

Dr Kiattiphum said the situation in these two scenarios would be brought under control in one or two months.

In the worst outlook, new infections would reach their peak in early March before the numbers gradually declined.

Dr Kiattiphum said it would take three to four months for health authorities to control the situation in the worst outlook.

The ministry did not expect the fatality rate from the new variant to be as high as from the Delta variant, but it would likely spread faster .

Daily new infections and deaths currently continue to decline with more people having been vaccinated, but Omicron threatens to reverse that trend, with Thailand recording its first case of Omicron on Dec 6 and the first community infection on Dec 20.

Dr Kiattiphum said strict health measures, the vaccination campaign and cooperation from the public, including strict obersvation of social distancing rules, would determine the success or failure of the fight against Omicron.

"We are at a crossroads again," Dr Kiattiphum said.

Cases jump

Omicron cases jumped five-fold, from 104 last Tuesday to 514 on Sunday, the Centre for Covid-19 Situation Administration (CCSA) reported on Monday.

“Two-thirds of the Omicron cases were arrivals and the other third were people in close contact with infected people,” CCSA spokeswoman Apisamai Srirangson said.

The biggest cluster originated with a couple who returned to Kalasin from a visit to relatives in Belgium on Dec 10. They had infected 21 other people as of last Friday.

The Delta variant still accounted for 56% of new cases in the country, but Omicron was expected to take over very soon, according to the ministry.

Holiday surge

Opas Karnkawinpong, the Department of Disease Control director-general, said the ministry was concerned about a likely rise in new cases after the holiday season as a result of the movement of people and their close contacts with others.

Infections would rise from people returning to home provinces to mark the New Year with their families, and revellers at New Year countdown events.

"A wider spread of the virus is expected after the New Year celebrations," Dr Opas said. He advised offices that have adopted the work-from-home format to continue with it to help limit the spread of the disease.

Although the country is under threat from the new variant, Dr Kiattiphum said, hospitals nationwide had sufficient beds to handle the situation because of the low 10% occupancy rate at present.

"We have more than enough hospital beds," he said. "We have been through Delta, which was deadlier."

Eventually the question has to be asked when is Covid, Covid, and when is it something else much less dangerous?

We may see that distinction made in the UK before we see it anywhere else.

Yes, there's much scaremongering through press, "Social Media" and government, not to mention a shit load of complete naivety from "Joe Public" with regards to any strain of Covid.
Unlike the "Common Cold", Omicron (as one of many) spreads like wildfire and whilst it seems symptoms are less severe, it is still greatly effecting the NHS and having a knock-on effect to others needing treatment for other conditions - it is not the common cold FFS and has caused major issues directly and indirectly.

Many seem to be completely oblivious of the above and have zero respect of the issues that Covid causes and has caused.
Yes, I had underlying conditions - but previously still managed to work a site job overseas in difficult conditions for long periods. We had to be fit - but Covid has knocked the utter f*ck out of me, so it shouldn't be underestimated or ever taken light of - whatever strain.

I am fully vaccinated (including Booster), but still have my concerns. Whilst I am not one of the "Doomsayers" who believe we are already six feet under, there are far too many that take things too lightly. The latter are those who will prolong all issues for us all.....

I would never wish this cr@p on anyone, but perhaps if they suffered to some extent - they may have more respect.

Should people have more respect, take note, take vaccines, take care - perhaps we'll all get out of this sh*te a little quicker!!
