Why turn off the router at all? It hurts nothing to leave it on 24/7. The only time in years mine has been off is when there is a power outage.

I agree. I've never turned of my router in all the years I've had one.

They're manufactured that way, to simply leave on. Given that, it will be an impossible task to find a remote for it I think.

I never turn the things off either but If you do want to, you can now buy remote control sockets that are controllable from a phone app:

Come on guys. He may want to turn it off so he feels comfortable that 3BB isn't judging him for have PornTube running 24/7. I actually think they would be impressed.

Seriously Hahuahin, there is no need to ever turn it off. Think of it like a utility, you don't turn off the mains to your house at night. Data is just another continuous service like electricity & water.

Thanks for the replies. :? Well then it's me who is a bit left with a bit old-fashioned as I have always heard that you should turn off the router when you are not at home and when router not in use as the router will be very hot which in turn will lead to slower internet and the possibility that some may hack the system if they have unlimited time to try.

I would turn it off if going away for a week, but not overnight. It'll only overheat under heavy load - which won't be at night so wouldn't worry about it ... and hacking can happen at any time of day!

How far is it to the street from your router - can your phone see your router if you stand on the street ? If not, then they probably can't see it either. If the strength is good.on the street, some routers let you turn down the strength to reduce the range.

I think you misunderstood me. Your router isn't going to be visible more than 20-30 metres away. If you stand on the street outside your house and cannot connect your phone to your WiFi router, then no one else can either ! (Unless they have some very expensive kit). Router accessibility drops off quite quickly and on some routers you can even reduce the power so the accessibility is less.

Now, connect to my WiFi from outside that can even I try with my little technical knowledge trying to do.
Thank you. hahuahin :)

It's always a good idea to turn it off every other week then turn out back on. It's like a soft reset; it's something I do if I notice speed starting to slow down.
Also, make sure your wifi is password protected with a decent password that is not your phone number.
I have a free app called wifi analyzer installed on my phone; with it your can see all the other wifi routers around, channel, signal strength and whether or not they are secured. You'll be quite surprised what you see with it.

Slightly off topic, but with regard to the soft reset. Most modern cars have computers that 'learn' your driving habits, and these become the norm. For example, if you dawdle around town most of the time, suddenly pressing the accelerator pedal will not provoke immediate kickdown. This is sometimes not desirable it I'm doing an upcountry run, so I'll either disconnect the battery for about a minute and then reconnect (soft reset) or use the built-in computer programming sequence instead. I find it a lot more responsive after that as it starts a new throttle position relearning sequence.
The same way Google learns your preferred sites and tailors your search result content.. Don't know how to reset that, though.
