Moving Back To Thailand Next Year

Hello HH Forum Members,

Joined this forum to start researching the possibility of living in Hua Hin. Been a member of various Thailand expat forums for 15+ years now. And lived in Thailand from 2007 - 2010 after retiring from the US Navy. While living there was an English teacher for two years. Lived in Taphan Hin, Phichit; Ban Phe, Rayong and Pattaya. Left to go back to work for the USN as a civilian and now ready to return. By the way I’ve only been back to Thailand once in late 2017. I’ll be 60 and my Thai wife 52 when we return next year.

So, that’s my introduction. Looking forward to asking questions being schooled by all of you on retired living in Hua Hin.

If you’ve been reading the Forum regularly you will have picked up that Hua Hin, like many areas of Thailand is not the same as it was 12+ months ago. Having said that, there’s still a reasonable sized expat community here to gather specific information. I don’t believe you mentioned what your intentions are regarding housing, but you’ll be spoilt by options.

Welcome to the forum. As stated above, the town has changed since the pandemic, but not really in a way that effects expats in day to day living. Some of the changes are positive, less traffic on the roads being one.

Storekeeper, I'm intrigued by your name, especially having served in the USN and went back as a civilian. My career anchor was as a storekeeper for the RN, although I advanced way beyond that, but in my heart, I'll always be a Naval Storekeeper.

I recognise your username from one of the more "vibrant" expat forums, so welcome to this forum, a very polite and civilised place in comparison, much like Hua Hin in fact.

I am sure you will get good answers to all your questions here.

We retired here in 2007, to a beachfront condo and never regretted it. The town has developed massively since then, and whereas in those days it was necessary to journey into town for almost everything, these days (or at least pre Covid) it is rarely necessary to hit the town centre unless for banking or mall shopping. There are good facilities ( shops, restaurants, markets, bars, coffee shops etc.) in most out of town areas. The countryside around the town and the coastline both north and south of the town is magnificent and easily explorable by day or overnight trips and the traffic is manageable compared to other parts of the country.

We have been in the UK since last March when Covid first hit, and from what I have learned from expats who remained in HH the town has changed quite a bit, but I would imagine and hope that once the threat from Covid has passed, or at least is under firm control then the resilience and adaptability of the Thais will ensure that hustle and bustle will soon return to what really is a most pleasant part of the country to live in.

I can heartily recommend the area.

I'm a fellow Yank, there is a few of us on here. Been here 6 years now split between the quiet, serene waters of Bang Saphan and the busier lifestyle of Hua HIn.

I find I can get most things here, except reasonably priced, good cigars, but sometimes the quality is much different than I was used to in the states.

I'm sure most miss some things from their home country but, all in all, I'm happy here.

Please feel free to ask any questions, I did when I first joined, and haven't gotten kicked out yet!
