Driving Bkk to HH

Post by Pagey »

Does anyone have the road directions from Bkk Airport to Hua Hin as I/we will be driving. I apologise if its on the site already but I did not see it in past posts.

Also read on another post about driving with a UK licence, can anyone confirm if its legal or not ?

Cheers.

I cannot be too precise at the moment as I do not have the map in front of me but anyway, get out of the airport and head south and get up on the elevated section asap. Follow this without turning off for about 23 KM. You can get to a major junction where you have to make a descision. You need to take the road that heads west. I cannot remember the place name but is is not the direction to Din Daeng of Bang Na. When they are signposted always get in the other lane. After about another 8 KM you will cross the river and the Krung Thai Bank Bridge. You then follow signe fo Samut Sakhon. This highway after about 80 KM will take you to highway 4 wher you follow the sign to Petchaburi and then Cha Am & Hua Hin.

Guess is right. Go road number 35 to Hua Hin.

The sign I always look for before I see "Samut Sakhon" is "Dao Kanong".

Keep in the Dao Kanong lane until you see Samut Sakhon and you'll be alright!

Good luck - did it recently, advice above is right, but expect some sharp lane changes! Driving is a hoot in LOS. Its just getting from A to B if its unfamiliar thats the problem!!!

Yes that is the one, I just could not remember. After crossing the river ignore signs to Dao Kanong and follow Samut Sakhon.

Just for sure

After Samut Sakhon follow signs for Samut Somkrham (All on Higway 35 otherwise known as Rama 2 Road) then signs to Petchaburi, Cha Am & Hua Hin all on Highway 4

You are generally all right with a UK Licence but it is not stricly legal, you need an International Licence to be legal. The cops usually pull you if you are in a Hire Car as you turn out of the Airport onto Vipawadee-Rangsit. You will get pulled if not wearing a seat belt(no matter that no one else is) also not being in the correct lane. Usually Baht 500 if you are alone Baht 200 if Thai wife of g/f is with you.

I always drive with an old style UK license in Thailand, the one that is just a folded up piece of paper. I find that the best policy if stopped by the police is to show this and my passport open at the photo page at the same time. They always seem happy with that, they mainly can’t read English anyway, so they are just happy to see a photo on an official document.
Also, do not drive too fast on the expressway, despite the fact that the rest of Bangkok does, as the police like to stop Farangs, for a contribution to their pension fund!
