7 Dangerous Days - New Year 2021

Post by PeteC »

First report is in per the below. Hopefully the carnage will be much less this year due to Covid cancelled trips this week and next.

1st 'dangerous day' claims 43

https://www.bangkokpost.com/thailand/ge ... -claims-43

Tuesday, the first of the "seven dangerous days" of the New Year period for Thailand's roads, claimed 43 lives.

The Road Safety Directing Centre says there were 414 road accidents across the country on that day, with a further 438 people being injured.

Tuesday marked the start of the busy New Year period, with the exodus of many people from Bangkok expected to slow traffic flows.

Deputy national police chief Damrongsak Kittiprapas said the highest number of crash deaths were in Chon Buri, Buri Ram, Phitsanulok, Phetchabun and Udon Thai, which had three each.

Chiang Mai reported most injuries (17) and Maha Sarakham the most road accidents (15). The biggest causes of accidents were speeding and drunk driving, said Pol Gen Damrongsak.

Motorcycles topped vehicles most commonly seen in accidents, he said, adding that a total of 44,657 arrests had been made nationwide.

Of the 210 traffic offenders to have already appeared in court by Tuesday night, the most common charges were drunk driving, driving under the influence of illicit drugs, reckless driving and driving without a licence.

Pol Gen Damrongsak said traffic checkpoints were already up and running and in many provinces these were also manned by healthcare workers amid the Covid-19 outbreak.

He added that a regulation had also been been introduced banning or limiting lorries from using the roads over the New Year holidays.

I suppose the diminished NY's activities will curtail Thailand's bid for the number 1 place in world accident standings. Well, there's always next year. Besides they can still compete in the year long competition. Ya gotta be number 1 in something otherwise, face is lost.

That says it all really. More deaths in one day of lunatic driving than in total from Covid-19.

Every year the numbers are almost constant with 85%+- motorcycle. Without those Thailand may have one of the safest ratings in the world!

Then, the solution is clear; more motorbikes and motorcycles are needed.

Day 3: 67 deaths, 642 injuries

https://www.bangkokpost.com/thailand/ge ... 2-injuries

Sixty-seven people died in road accidents nationwide on the last day of 2020, up 28.8% from the same day of the road safety campaign in the previous year.

A total of 652 accidents took place on Dec 31 on the second day of the campaign, up 23.2%, with 642 injuries, up 16.7%, according to the Road Safety Center.

The province with the most accidents and injuries was Chiang Mai (27), which also led in the number of accumulative accidents over the first three days of the campaign, with 63.

Nakhon Ratchasima saw the most fatalities, with seven on Thursday and 13 over the past three days. (All 7 may be in the photo at the link. )

Like in the previous two days of the campaign, the main causes of the accidents on Thursday were drink driving (38%) and speeding (34.4%).

Motorcycles continued to lead as the type of vehicles most prone to accidents, at 85.9%, followed by pickup trucks (5.4%) and small passenger cars (3.1%).

Most of the accidents occurred on major highways (33.6%) and rural roads (11.2%). The time of the day when most accidents took place was 4-8pm (29.7%) and people aged 50 or more were the most affected group (25.8%).

Kachornsak Kaewcharas, deputy director-general of the Disease Control Department, said the centre had asked provincial authorities to step up screening at checkpoints, which also took temperatures of travellers to prevent the spread of Covid-19.

It's amazing that the roads are still so busy over in Thailand.
Back in Europe it's been one of the few benefits of Covid, way less traffic, I commute by Ebike and I used to take a lengthy detour to keep on cycle tracks but now I don't bother, I just use the roads because they're so quiet.
I'm on a night shift tonight which starts an hour after curfew so I'll have the roads to myself!

When the country went into full lockdown the first time, Thai roads were deserted for a few weeks, but things gradually returned to normal.

I actually thought the '7 dangerous days' would see a drastic reduction because of the semi lockdown, so the authorities would be able to brag about how well they've done. Seems I was wrong again.

Perhaps traffic is at normal levels and so are these statistics?

Covid or not, the Bangkok speed freaks have still invaded the roads en masse as the govt keeps encouraging them to. When you combine pretentious pricks in SUVs that think they're the most important people on the planet with locals on clapped-out bikes riding the way they have done for years there will be carnage.
