What a lovely, gay frock.

Yes, you can forget now and forever the original and real meaning of the word "gay".

Really? I don't want to sound like a convent girl (which I certainly aren't, as I'm an agnostic), but I can't for the life of me think of an alternative. Maybe it's a man thing...Dannie Boy wrote: ↑Fri Nov 13, 2020 9:11 amThat’s the polite version!!Vital Spark wrote:Like a dog with two tails...

I'm as old as my tongue but a little bit older than my teeth.

Re: Dated expressions in English
"Call a spade a spade", originally a very innocent expression meaning to speak plainly without avoiding unpleasant or embarrassing issues.
At least in the US it took on a racial meaning, i.e., "black as the ace of spades", and subsequently aimed at black people.
You never see it in print in modern US media any longer.

Re: Dated expressions in English
Well this thread hasn't seen the light of day for a little while.....
I was visiting the local Practice earlier today to have dressings changed and whilst waiting in the usual queue was chatting to this old boy who'd obviously travelled a fair bit in his day and was a joy to chat to - literally had me in tears of laughter. He came out with some absolute gems .....
Apparently he was "not up to dick" but would "pang wangle" going on with life..... I had to ask where the hell the latter came from and the discussion led to phrases/expressions as it would - his favorite being "Hot as a Half-Fucked Fox in a Forest Fire"...... Class never gets old!! [EDIT] And at his age can get away with saying it!!

Some crackers there Pete!
I'd only ever heard the first one. 'Pang Wangle' is apparently a vintage American phrase. The fox one cracked me up.
