RSV (Respiratory syncytial virus)

Post by HHTel »

Unbelievable. If we haven't had enough problems with Covid, the schools are shutting down again because of an outbreak of RSV. Never heard of it before. Highly contagious. They've been trying to develop a vaccine since the 1960's. Mostly affects youngsters. Mitigation is pretty much the same as Covid - hand washing and social distancing. In adults is like a mild cold, but can be quite severe in children and old people. Cases are sprouting up over the last week or so triggering the schools to temporarily shut down.
My 3 year old granddaughter appears to have it.
The upside is that once you've recovered from it, you're unlikely to be infected again for 5 - 7 years.
Can be severe enough to warrant hospitalisation if it leads to bronchitis.

This link says it affects children up to 2 years old. I think the facts are lost in translation. I'm sure it should read that children up to 2 years old that are infected should be rushed to hospital. Anyone can catch it especially children.

Is serious for children up to about 5 yrs old. There was an outbreak in Hua Hin about 2yrs ago. My grandson then 2 1/2 caught it and required intravenous antibiotics and nebuliser treatment at hospital. Took about 10 days to fully recover. If I remember right we all had flu like symptoms at the time.

It appears to have temporarily closed some kindergartens.
Now we have rising cases of HFMD (Hand, Foot and Mouth Disease).

I think it's more common than many know. My daughter had it here in 2007 at age 2 and was indeed hospitalized, IV, oxygen etc. At the time they didn't call it "RSV", they simply called it bronchial pneumonia. My oldest daughter also had it, again age 2 and the same symptoms and treatment. I think it's been with us for a very long time, maybe centuries.
