The Lake at Tap Tai

Post by Big Boy »

Always looking for new places to walk our dogs, a favourite these days is to walk around the lake at Tap Tai. I say lake, but it's more of an abandoned quarry.

There's a footpath about 2/3 of the way around with a roundabout at either end. Serious runners and walkers do the route between the roundabouts (often several times), or you can do the final 1/3 across country (easy walking), which is what we usually do. There are quite a few wild dogs there - yes they show an interest, might even bark, but they are no bother. The route we take is a modest 1.8Km.

The reason I post though is not about dog walking, but wondering what the quarry is used for these days. It is obviously flooded, but I see little sign of fish. Initially, I just thought an abandoned quarry. Then I noticed what appeared to be a concrete block construction. I actually thought I was going a bit doolally when these concrete blocks were moving to different parts of the lake. However, whenever we go, the blocks are definitely somewhere different, so it was more likely to be a raft that looked like blocks. I have to assume as there is a raft that moves around the lake, there has to be something happening down there. Does anybody know what?

I have been out to that quarry when it was virtually dry from end to end and that raft was well grounded. Certainly there was nothing under it. I have also seen the quarry when it had water in it (nothing close to full however) and the raft would be in different locations from time to time. I'm betting it is just being blown about by the wind.

I hadn't even considered that it might be getting blown around as it is always alongside in one of 3 places when I see it, but yes, a definite possibility.

Besides the dirt itself, what did they ever "quarry" out of there?

Drive from the new Hua Hin Hospital #5 to Soi 102 (Soi 112 at Dusita #1 & 2) On looking around out there it will be noticed that several very large tracts of land have been filled and leveled including adjacent to the “lakes” — there are more than one. Also lots of street lights have been installed along the road although it is a remote area. All that adds up to lots of ฿฿฿ and seems to suggest that somthing must be cooking, such as some sort of development plan.

So my take is that the “quarries” were created as the source of the needed fill dirt and are likely intended to be incorporated as lakes into whatever development is planed or hoped for.

The raft… who knows = could be some local’s endeavor for a swimming platform

What is the surface of the footpath? Due to arthritis in two knees I can not run anymore but walk-jogging a few km if surface a bit softer than asphalt.
Thank you

Concrete. It is possible to go just off the path, which is a firm rough sandy type surface. We saw a friend up there just recently who does just that.

Wasn't it planned a Chinese village development in that area or was that in another part of Hua Hin?

To be honest, most of it looks derelict. Newly planted trees dead or dying and an abandoned feel about it. And when I was last there the quarry was empty. I keep a watching brief as I was hoping it would develop into something like the lake at the army camp in Korat, which is a 3km circuit, where you can walk, jog, run, cycle, canoe in the lake or just exercise on machines or join various organised exercise activities. Very popular morning and evenings with a feel good factor about it.

They recently erected this stone sign. Looks like a public garden or park. I’ve been going there for a few months now, and they haven’t done anything new except for putting up that sign.Image
