Dengue Fever & Malaria Thread

Post by PeteC »

It's shaping up to be a bad season, and it's not even raining yet to any great degree. I know many will think of Dengue as less important and threatening than Covid-19, but please don't. Take the necessary steps to clear your housing of standing water, and use a DEET product when out.

Over 700 cases of dengue fever found in Korat

https://www.bangkokpost.com/thailand/ge ... d-in-korat

NAKHON RATCHASIMA: A campaign is being launched in Muang district to prevent the spread of dengue fever after 737 cases of the mosquito-borne tropical disease were found in this northeastern province.

The campaign involves village health volunteers going out to villages to distribute abate sand granules to kill mosquito larvae.

Dr Kittipong Sanchartwiroon, director of the 9th Disease Control Office, said the numbers of people who contracted dengue fever in four lower northeastern provinces under the jurisdiction of his office have increased rapidly.

During January-April this year, Nakhon Ratchasima had 737 dengue fever cases -- 27.92 per 100,000 population -- followed by Chaiyaphum's 223 cases (19.57 per 100,000 population), Buri Ram's 143 cases (8.98 per 100,000 population), and Surin's 96 cases (6.87 per 100,000 population).

In Nakhon Ratchasima, the hardest-hit district was Non Thai with 73 cases and one death, followed by Non Sung district with 70 cases and Chok Chai district with 48 cases.

Affected the most were people in the 10-14 age group, followed by the 5-9 and 15-24 groups.

It is, therefore, necessary to step up the campaign against the dengue fever spread alongside the measures to stem the coronavirus pandemic, Dr Kittipong said.

Disease Control Dept warns of dengue fever outbreak

https://www.nationthailand.com/news/30386997

Dr Thanarak Phliphat, deputy director-general of the Department of Disease Control, said that with the return of dengue fever it may soon become tougher for doctors to diagnose and detect Covid-19 infections.

This is because both viruses show different symptoms based on the age group. For instance, among children, Covid-19 symptoms are mild and about 40 percent of patients have low fever.

Among adults, dengue fever results in high fever and muscle ache, much like the symptoms of Covid-19, though 50 percent of Covid-19 patients may have a cough.

Also, he said, usually respiratory conditions are diagnosed as respiratory disease rather than dengue fever.

As of April 14, there have been 8,746 dengue fever cases and six patients have succumbed to the disease.

The department believes this year may see as many as 70,000 dengue fever cases, he said, adding that people should take care of themselves and get rid of mosquito breeding grounds.

Christ - nothing like booking a holiday at the wrong time (September), hopefully out of Covid-19 travel restrictions by then (although flight booked on Thai Airways - bankrupt?) and the added bonus of Dengue! A friend in HK suffered from this a few years back - and believe me he suffered. Wouldn't wish this on anybody. HK at that time closed all building sites (standing water) - very much doubt Thailand would impose similar restrictions.

Yes, I'm extra sensitive to it this year as the daughter was in hospital for 5 days last year with the more serious strain of DHF (Dengue hemorrhagic fever).

She was one sick puppy and per the doctor she was on the cusp of her internal organs bleeding, but she fortunately got past that point without damage. She was only 13 and the Gov. concluded she probably got it at her school or the trip to/from. (She was riding her bike to school at the time).

Dengue fever is certainly no joke. My son was hospitalised with Dengue fever a few years ago. He was around 28 years old. My daughter also came down with it and was hospitalised. She was 10 year old at the time. Both of them suffered and were very sick.
The only option (like covid) is prevention as there is no cure.

I believe the first case of covid found in Thailand (the first case outside of China) was initially being treated for Dengue.

They might impose restrictions. They're getting used to doing that nowadays.

Hope she is doing fine. The DHF is one tough strain. Saw alot of it in Honduras

Dengue fever sickens 1,034 in Korat, two deaths

https://www.bangkokpost.com/thailand/ge ... two-deaths

NAKHON RATCHASIMA: An outbreak of dengue fever has killed two people and sickened more than 1,000 others in Nakhon Ratchasima since the start of the year, but the Covid-19 situation is under control, the provincial health chief said.

Narinrat Phitchayakhamin, head of the provincial public health office, said on Tuesday that all people in the province infected with coronavirus 2019 had fully recovered and been discharged. There were no new cases.

However, the situation with dengue fever, another viral disease, was worrying, Dr Narinrat said.

A total of 1,037 cases were recorded in Nakhon Ratchasima from Jan 1 to May 24. There were two deaths.

The first fatality was a resident of Non Sung district, who died on March 10. The second was a 16-year-old who died on March 22 and had suffered from thalassaemia before contracting dengue fever,

Non Thai district had the highest number of dengue fever cases in the province, with 92; followed by Non Sung, 61; Chok Chai, 50.

The provincial public health chief advised people to ensure there was no stagnant water around their homes, because it was a breeding ground for mosquitoes that carry the dengue virus. The area around their houses should also be fogged with insecticide by local health officials, to kill the mosquitoes.

https://www.bangkokpost.com/thailand/ge ... -this-year

More than 14,000 people have contracted dengue fever and 11 have died so far this year, Disease Control Department director-general Suwanchai Wattanayingcharoenchai said on Sunday, according to a media report.

Citing a report from the Bureau of Epidemiology, from Jan 1 to May 25 this year, 14,136 people were found to have caught dengue fever, or 21.28 per 100,000 population. Eleven people died from the disease during the same period, or 0.02 per 100,000 population.

The five provinces with the highest numbers of dengue fever cases per 100,000 population were Rayong at 73, Chaiyaphum 58.13, Khon Kaen 53.83, Mae Hong Son 37.87 and Nakhon Ratchasima 36.92.

By region, the numbers of dengue fever cases per 100,000 population were 25.67 in the Northeast, 22.04 in the Central region, 18.42 in the South and 14.14 in the North.

Mr Suwanchai said dengue fever cases have been on the rise due to the increase in water-logged areas now that rainy season has arrived, which are conducive to the outbreak of the disease.

To control the outbreak, teams have been deployed to spray repellents to kill mosquitoes. People have been asked to cooperate by getting rid of breeding grounds for larvae in their communities and sleeping under mosquito nets.

Note: Number of cases is already far more than Covid-19, and wait a while and the death toll will surpass Covid-19 as well. :(

Dengue fever outbreak sickens nearly 6,000 Thai kids

https://thethaiger.com/dengue-fever/den ... -6000-kids

While the Covid-19 outbreak is easing in Thailand, there is growing alarm over a nationwide outbreak of dengue fever, which has sickened nearly 6,000 children already this year. On June 2, Thailand had recorded 15,385 cases of dengue fever, which killed 11 people, according to the director-general of the Department of Disease Control.

More than a third of those cases, 5,828, have been children aged 5 – 14, 4 of whom died. Delaying treatment, underlying medical conditions and obesity all increase the chances of the mosquito-borne virus being fatal.

A recent investigation found mosquito larvae are still prevalent at Thai school campuses, some which are set to reopen on Monday as more Emergency Decree restrictions are lifted. Most were found in unused containers, plant pots, and old tyres, places where stagnant water is allowed to collect.

“The rainy season, which creates puddles of water that serve as breeding grounds for mosquitos, is the main factor that is boosting the outbreak. I would like to ask people to look out for unused containers that might become breeding grounds in households.”

Health officials in Isaan’s Ubon Ratchathani province revealed they’ve recorded 800 cases of dengue so far this year, a small number compared to the 8,000 with 10 deaths recorded last year, but still cause for worry, according to the DDC.

It's not the only option. There is a vaccine - it's not recommended for everyone but your offspring are both in the category where it is. According to the WHO, use of the dengue vaccine is only indicated for people aged 9 - 45, living in a dengue endemic area and having previously been diagnosed with dengue fever.

Dengue on the rise in the northeast, wet season worries

https://thethaiger.com/hot-news/environ ... on-worries

As if you haven’t got enough to worry about. For now, Covid-19 is largely under control here in the Land of Smiles, but the annual worries around the wet season and Dengue Fever are an ongoing nuisance. Whilst Covid-19 is getting all the headlines, Dengue is a clear and present danger for anyone living in Thailand, especially at this time of the year. Zika Virus and Chikungunya Disease are also painful and potentially dangerous mosquito-borne diseases.

Along with the rainy season comes mosquitos, especially if you happen to live nearby a water source. Dengue fever is already causing problems in some provinces, with 15 people dead and currently 25,708 cases of the the fever for 2020. Isaan (Northeast Thailand) is the current hotspot for Dengue. The age range with the highest current dengue fever cases are firstly 15-24 years old, then 10-14 years old and 25-34 years old. Although there is a high proportion of the cases Isaan, there are cases across the nation.

Chaiyaphum province has the highest number of dengue fever followed by Rayong Province, Khon Kaen Province, Mae Hong Son Province, and Nakhon Ratchasima. Dengue fever cases are now expected to rise as the country enters into the depths of the annual wet season and dank pools of water attract the mosquitos to breed.

The Thai Department of Disease Control has sent out another warning for people living in Thailand to beware of mosquitoes and to take safety precautions to avoid mosquitos and help eliminate breeding opportunities. These simple 3 steps can help protect against more mosquitoes decreasing the risk of dengue fever, Zika Virus, Chikungunya Disease.

1. Clean around your home to avoid water collection where mosquitoes can lay eggs, including plastic waste where water can be trapped

2. Store water in a closed system where mosquitoes are unable to breed

3. Take steps to avoid being bitten by mosquitos. Thaiger Top 10 recommendations: https://thethaiger.com/thai-life/top-10 ... ngue-fever

There are no specific medications to treat dengue infection. If you think you may have dengue fever, you should use pain relievers with acetaminophen and avoid medicines with aspirin, which could make potential bleeding worse. You should also rest, drink plenty of fluids, and see your doctor or visit a clinic immediately.

A lot of Thailand is jungle. And the weather is mostly very humid. Mosquitoes thrive in both situations. You’re in their domain and they’re not going anywhere just because you want to live here or are on vacation. Aedes aegypti carry Dengue Fever which is very prevalent in South East Asian countries.

The symptoms of the fever include fever, headache, nausea, muscle pain, joint pain, and a skin rash appearing all over the body including the back. The incubation period can be 3-24 days after exposure to the mosquito carrying the dengue virus. In a small number of cases, the dengue fever develops into a severe hemorrhagic fever that results in bleeding, low blood platelets, and blood plasma leakage.

The use of ground-spray insecticides (fogging) to kill mosquitoes that spread Zika, Dengue, and Chikungunya viruses, is one part of an integrated mosquito management program.

Over time and repeated use, insecticide resistance can occur in mosquito populations. Provinces in Thailand use insecticides as part of a broad annual mitigation approach to help reduce the prevalence of mosquitos in at-risk areas.

Dengue is just one of the things people living in, and visiting Thailand, need to be vigilant about.

Ignore Dengue at your own peril. It's easier to catch here than Covid-19, and can be just as deadly :(

Cambodia suffers acute Chikungunya outbreak

If it's there, it will be here if not already.

https://thethaiger.com/news/regional/ca ... a-outbreak

Chikungunya, often likened to Dengue, has spread to 12 provinces across Cambodia. Over a thousand patients have now tested positive for the mosquito-borne disease between July 19 and 31.

Dengue and Chikungunya, though carried by the same mosquito type, are caused by different viruses. While Chikungunya is caused by a Togaviridae alphavirus, Dengue is caused by a Flavirideae flavivirus. The incubation period of Chikungunya is of 1-12 days and the duration of major symptoms can varies from one to two weeks – Wikipedia.

Of the 1,020 cases – 5% were women – over 80% occurred in Siem Reap, Banteay Meanchey, Kampong Cham and Preah Vihear provinces, according to data from the National Centre for Malaria Control, Parasitology and Botany. There were also cases reported in Oddar Meanchey, Tboung Khmum, Takeo, Kampot, Kampong Som, Pursat, Stung Treng and Pailin provinces.

The Health Ministry reported the province with the highest cases of chikungunya was Siem Reap (the major town near Angkor Wat) with 407 cases, followed by Banteay Meanchey with 211 and Kampong Cham with 132.

Swelling and pain is high in Chikungunya as compared to that in Dengue. Chikungunya can create the possibilities of tremendous joint pain. Whereas Dengue can cause bleeding in some cases, breathing problems.

Cambodia’s Health Minister Mam Bun Heng says the measures to prevent the spread of chikungunya are similar to preventing dengue fever.

“You must avoid getting bitten by female mosquitos carrying the virus by removing all mosquito-breeding grounds, use repellent and hang mosquito nets where you sleep.”

Bun Heng is urging anyone with a temperature above 37.5C to go to the nearest public hospital instead of trying to self-medicate. Provincial health director Kros Sarath says that Siem Reap is witnessing its first outbreak of the virus in a province usually threatened by Dengue.
