Ton Up

Why do fans wave Ton Up signs when a player reaches 100 points? I don't see the relationship between 100 and a Ton. Is the British ton different in weight to the rest of the world?

Not sure if there is a definitive explanation. Ton, Tun etc has had many meanings through the ages. When referring to 100, it's usually colloquial.

However when referring to the tonnage of a ship, one ton = 100 cubic feet!
