Termite Season 2021 and beyond

Post by PeteC »

Change the year, keep the same thread. It's an early bump but unfortunately we had a lot of wing shedding already in the East with the rain today (4 April 2021), and it's not even night yet. With the difference in climate and the forecast for a heavy monsoon this year we may see a different, much earlier pattern. :(

It's that time of year again when the showers and storms will start this month and our little friends will be back swarming in the thousands. Black out conditions should apply around your houses when the first rains arrive.

Although, I recall BB saying last year that they were swarming on his street before the rains even started.

Yes, Pete, we had them through January and February again this year. Some really bad swarms. Most days stating about 18:45 and lasting about an hour.

Big swarm of flying termites/ants outside right now. Can't remember seeing this in the daylight hours before.

You mean, none of you are happy that you can catch them in pots or plastic bowls and then rip off their wings and eat them the next day.......!!!???

A slightly larger swarm of flying ants than the ones we get in our garden. Yuck!

They've been very quiet here this year. We've normally had a few major swarms before April.

A lot has to do with the landscape. Have you had major changes i.e. leveling and digging in the acreage across the street from you this past year?

They've been developing about 20 acres of jungle behind me for the past 2 years and last year we had a noticeable decrease in swarms. Too soon this year to see if the pattern will change further.

When we were in Thailand, and the insects were swarming we woud close the fly screen sit there with the lights on and we would have up to 10 of these having a good feast Great fun.

No, it's back to 100% jungle again.

Termite Season 2022

Post by PeteC »

New thread this year as they are very late as compared to the past two years. Could be because of that cold snap we had a few weeks ago. Can only hope that killed some of them off. :D With the rains forecast for this week and the late date, I would think we'll be seeing them shortly.

I probably say this every year, but we get swarms of them from January through to August. Not every night, but several times each month.

We seem the have 3 varieties:

- Early months small ones.
- Middle period medium ones
- Latter period the massive ones.

All 3 varieties tend to arrive about 6:45pm and have gone by 7:30. They all arrive in huge clouds, and drop their wings before running around. The frogs and lizards love it.

We had them for several nights in February after the rains; but they generally do not arrive before May and not every year.

Dead Flying Termites- Smells

Post by bigston »

This might be a bit out there or not , having no experience with this before
the flying termites arrived in huge numbers 4 nights ago and last night there were still quite a few but way way less than previous nights
there has been a rather horrible smell building, similar to something that has crawled under the house and died
around the accumulated points where these insects, and im talking hundreds if not thousands, have met their fate by one means or another, including insect spray and ' the rain '
after "cleaning up " all around outside, in the window grooves, window sills , in the fly wire screens etc etc
the smell has just about gone.
So, was it the termites ??
