Khao Tao Lake

Post by Big Boy »

I've often wondered how far it was around Khao Tao Lake, and was it walkable during the day. I am also aware distance across water can be deceptive. My son, always looking for somewhere new to run decided to run the lake last night - it turns out the walkway around the lake is a mere 2.2Km (he ran it 5 times).

That's it I thought, well walkable, and did the walk at lunchtime today (No fool but the Englishman................). What a very pleasant walk it was. I stopped every 100 steps and photographed ahead of me. I came across quite a few unusual birds on my way around, but only spotted 1 terrapin and 1 fish in the water. 75% of the walk is on a walkway not connected to the shore, so no pesky dogs to bother me either. Because it close to the beach, there was a cooling sea breeze all the way around as well.

My photographs on the way around (as usual, the forum's software shows them in reverse order, so best to start at the bottom and work up :? ):

That's the place where you were before I think, with the Pennsylvania Dutch type farm buildings. :D

I see they are still drawing a crowd!

Yes, but this time I did the entire journey on foot, it was nowhere near as far as I'd imagined, and a lot nicer than driving.

Yes, something like that  Actually, with the sea breeze, I barely broke sweat.

Certainly looks more than 2.2 kms. However it that's what you say it then it is and I'll certainly be giving it a go during the next week.

Is that lake used for local water supply? If so you may see the level decreasing significantly over the next few months.

If you count the photos, it will be about 3,100 steps. Not far at all.

I estimated it around 1-1.5km. Shows how good my judgement is...

For many years, we've often eaten at that thatched shack which is the third business along in the first picture. It's always been good for basic local food at lunchtime.

Unfortunately the LHG also underestimates length....

This reminds me of school days when we had to run round the local reservoir 1mile 7 furlongs in all kinds of weather twice happy days.

When we didn't bring our rugby kit to school in Wales, we had to do 10 laps of the pitch (a bit over 2 miles) in our underwear - don't think that would happen these days!! Furlongs??? By Christ, did they have schools in those days?

The walk around the lake however looks interesting - and a spot of fishing as well, any idea how that works? Licenses, cost, catch/release? What fish are there??
