Importing household goods
Importing household goods
Hello wise members,
We are currently building just south of HH
my question is
i have many still very serviceable electrical items, here that i would take, and have sent in the 20 ft container we will sending over,
including freezer, washing machine, microwave, plus a few other minor kitchen appliances
is this ok to do, are there possible taxes, duty etc ?? on these items
i have scoured the internet and keep finding conflicting information
we also wish to send over numerous garden instruments, plus a Kanga Mini Loader, which is NOT FOR USE ON ROAD, as its max speed is 5 km/hr
but will be used on our 3200 sq m plot for drilling holes for fence posts and moving landscape rocks
would appreciate any input, suggestions guidance etc
Thank You

Re: Importing household goods
If your wife is Thai, you can avoid taxes by claiming repatriation.
When I moved here, I was advised a UK fridge/freezer would probably not be upto the higher Thai temperatures, but I guess if you're bringing a container anyway, why not try it.

No wife, no thai connection
our appliances here are 240 V so i believe the 220 V should be ok
the beer may not quite be as chilled....

Re: Importing household goods
Apart from anything else, ALL of your electrical appliances will need transformers. The supply here is 220 Volts, 50 hz.

Re: Importing household goods
You posted while I was writing this:
The voltage is only part of it, the frequency is just as important especially with appliances that have a motor in them.

Re: Importing household goods
We brought a few smaller appliances with us - nothing enjoyed a long life - everything was replaced in fairly quick order. Unless you have plenty of space in the container, you will probably be better saving on shipping costs and buying new when you arrive.

Just so I can get a clearer picture in my mind where where will you be bringing your container from? I did not you have a Kanga Mini loader amounts your items. Yes, it would be good if that was made clear from the start!Just so I can get a clearer picture in my mind where where will you be bringing your container from? I did not you have a Kanga Mini loader amounts your items. They were originally designed and manufactured on the Gold coast(QLD) if my memory serve correctly

Re: Importing household goods
Your electrical goods will probably cope ok. Good luck with the Kanga! All of it will depend firstly on how good your shipping agent is, and secondly which side of the bed the inspecting customs officer got out of bed.

Re: Importing household goods
I did bring a few bits and pieces from Oz (I think Nereus brought substantially more!!) and probably one of the most useful items for electrical equipment was a few 10 amp sockets so I I could make a few conversion leads and not destroy the original moulded plugs. For the lower wattage appliances I bought some el cheapo leads with moulded sockets/plugs and re terminated the plug ends for thai power points (worked out cheaper than buying sockets)
Suggest you buy a few spare filters for the Kanga (particularly the hydraulic oil return) and bring them with you.'Diplomacy is the art of telling people to go to hell in such a way they ask for directions'. -Winston Churchill-
Re: Importing household goods
Not sure where you got that from? The only thing that I bought with me was my Range Rover, and ended up paying more in duty than it was probably worth.I think Nereus brought substantially more!!
I did bring a Triton saw bench a bit later, but I just hand carried it by air and bribed the curious custom bod.'
The Kanga MAY attract duty, mainly because they will not know what it is. Just tell them it is a kids toy, and as Australia is a big place the kids have BIG toys!
