90 % come from fires from farmers in fields or forests. Here or from other provinces or nearby countries. On my morning bike ride today i saw 2 big fires in fields and farmers who controlled them (near Pranburi)

Harmful dust pollution shrouds 50 provinces
People in 50 provinces awoke to harmful levels of ultrafine dust in the air they breath on Monday morning, according to the Geo-Informatics and Space Technology Development Agency (Gistda).
Worst affected areas were in the Central plains and the Northeast.
Gistda reported at 7am on Monday on its website pm25.gistda.or.th that 50 of the 77 provinces, mostly central plains and northeastern provinces, were shrouded in a harmful density of particulate matter 2.5 micrometres and less in diameter (PM2.5).
The levels ranged from 37.7 to 96.6 microgrammes of PM2.5 per cubic metre of air over the past 24 hours. The goverrnment's new safety threshold is 37.5µg/m³.
At 7am, the worst level, 96.6µg/m³, was recorded in Sing Buri, followed by 89.8µg/m³ in Kalasin, 85.0µg/m³ in Chai Nat, 82.2µg/m³ in Nong Khai and 77.1µg/m³ in Ang Thong. These provinces were in the red levels of PM2.5, meaning the air pollution could seriously affect a person's health.
The levels were 47.7µg/m³ in Bangkok, 44.6µg/m³ in Samut Prakan, 44.4µg/m³ in Nonthaburi, 50.1µg/m³ in Nakhon Pathom and 45.2µg/m³ in Pathum Thani.
People in 50 provinces (65%) out of 77 provinces nationwide were suffering under the smog. Only 27 provinces were spared unsafe levels, most in the North or the South.
They were the northernmost province of Chiang Rai, with the lowest reading oif 7.7µg/m³, Mae Hong Son, Chiang Mai, Lamphun, Pattani, Surat Thani, Krabi, Chumphon, Nakhon Si Thammarat, Phayao, Lampang, Phuket, Phangna, Satun, Ranong, Songkhla, Yala, Phrae, Nan, Phatthalung, Trang, Narathiwat, Trat, Bung Kan, Chanthaburi, Nakhon Nayok and Tak.

Drove down from Samut Songkhram yesterday, and through Phetchaburi & Hua Hin, you could barely see the hills in the distance off 4 & 37. If not knowing there, you might not of even notice their outline.
Pretty sad state, and still don't understand why tourist come to TH in smog season, or at all.

They're paying the Thai farmers billions under a recently established program not to burn their sugar cane and other stubble, but that won't stop what blows across the border from everywhere else.

Seems so. My son tells me the air quality in Bangkok has been diabolical for at least a month.
When I first came to Thailand in the 1990s, the weather/climate was cited as one of the top criteria for coming/staying here. This no longer seems to be the case with longer smog/hot/wet/flood seasons and shorter periods when the weather is actually nice here (Nov. to Feb. essentially). I wonder what the opposite of "snowbirds" is as I reckon there will be quite a few wanting to escape Thailand during these extreme periods soon (myself included).

Unsafe dust levels in most provinces
Forty-one of the 77 provinces were shrouded with unsafe levels of ultra-fine dust, the greatest number in the Central Plain, on Monday morning.
The Geo-Informatics and Space Technology Development Agency (Gistda) reported the accumulation of particulate matter 2.5 micrometres and less in diameter (PM2.5) at 8am.
Unsafe PM2.5 levels ranged from 38.1 to 112.3 microgrammes per cubic metre of air over the past 24 hours. The government's set safe threshold is 37.5µg/m³.
Three provinces were blanketed by red-code levels of PM2.5, meaning a serious impact on health. The highest, 112.3µg/m³, was measured in Samut Songkhram to the west of Bangkok, followed by 92.7µg/m³ in adjacent Samut Sakhon and 76.7µg/m³ in nearby Nakhon Pathom.
Thirty-eight other provinces were covered by orange-code levels of PM2.5 from 38.1 to 71.4µg/m³, meaning the smog had started to affect health.
In a descending order, they included Ratchaburi, Ang Thong, Chai Nat, Sing Buri, Nonthaburi, Ayutthaya, Pathum Thani, Phetchaburi, Suphan Buri, Kanchanaburi, Uthai Thani, Saraburi, Lop Buri, Nakhon Sawan, Bangkok, Phichit and Chachoengsao.
Other provinces with orange levels were Samut Prakan, Kamphaeng Phet, Chon Buri, Sa Kaeo, Tak, Prachuap Khiri Khan, Phitsanulok, Sukhothai, Lamphun, Nakhon Ratchasima, Prachin Buri, Rayong, Nong Khai, Phetchabun, Nakhon Nayok, Loei, Nong Bua Lam Phu, Uttaradit, Chanthaburi, Udon Thani and Chaiyaphum.

Our bedroom has the air cleaned every night, and doors closed during the day. When we put the purifier on last night it started ay 54, which is 4 above the danger level. OK, the levels soon dropped, but for those without an air purifier, it is basically a hidden killer.
