Unfortunately it appears we now need a thread like this given the frequency of bad air in Bangkok and elsewhere.

Please post to it if you come across alert data for any area of the country.

You can check this link for more Thailand and worldwide data: https://www.airvisual.com

The below is specifically for the Hua Hin area

An unhealthy level of air pollution covered 14 areas of Greater Bangkok on Monday morning, according to the Pollution Control Department due to particulate matter smaller than 2.5 micrometres (PM2.5).

Bangkok residents woke up to see a cloud of small dust in the heart of the capital, including Pathum Wan, Din Daeng, and sections of Lat Phra road.

Levels of 42-66 micrograms per cubic metre (µg/m3) were found in 14 areas. Thailand’s official safety limit is 50µg/m3, double the World Health Organisation’s 25µg/m3.

Bangkok was also ranked the second highest after Hanoi on Monday for the pollution, according to the air quality and pollution city ranking as reported by airvisual.com.

The Pollution Control Department reported high air pollution counts in the following areas: Kanchanaphisek Rd Bang Khun Thian Bangkok, Rama IV Rd. Khet Pathum Wan Bangkok, Intarapitak Rd. Khet Thon Buri Bangkok, Lat Phrao Rd. Khet Wang Thonglang Bangkok, Din Daeng Rd. Khet Din Daeng Bangkok, Pubpla Khet Wang Thonglang Bangkok, Mueang Nakhon Pathom, Bang Krua Bang Kruai Nonthaburi, Bang Phut Pak Kret Nonthaburi, Khlong Nueng Khlong Luang Pathum Thani, Song Kanong Phra Pradaeng Samut Prakan, Pak Nam Meuang Samut Prakan, Om Noi Krathum Baen Samut Sakhon and Maha Chai Mueang Samut Sakhon.

Yes, it is pretty bad right now. Visibility down to a couple of Km's where I am in Bangkok. Not mentioned anywhere, but it looks to me like a classic "temperature inversion", combined with very light surface winds from the north. Place sucks!

I arrived in Bkk a few hours ago and all seemed well until I went over the bridge where the Kbank building is - I was stunned by the reality. Doesn't seem so bad where I am. But I don't think my sister and BIL will be too impressed when they arrive tomorrow.

Hua Hin seemed hazy earlier as well.

PM holds urgent haze meeting

https://www.bangkokpost.com/thailand/ge ... ze-meeting

Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha on Monday held an urgent video-conference with 16 provincial governors and related ministries after PM2.5 air pollution exceeded the so-called safe level in Bangkok and surrounding provinces.

Also present were Deputy PM and Public Health Minister Anutin Charnvirakul, Interior Minister Gen Anupong Paojinda, Transport Minister Saksayam Chidchob, and the head of the Pollution Control Department.

Gen Prayut said the conference dealt with preparations, cooperation and measures to combat the air pollution problem.

The urgent meeting was called after fine PM 2.5 dust haze returned to blanket the capital and its vicinity.

Dr Sukhum Kanchanapimai, Public Health permanent secretary, yesterday urged people who worked outdoors to wear face masks and drink 6-8 glasses of water a day as PM2.5 levels rose above the so-called safe threshold of 50 microgrammes per cubic metre (µg/m³).

Water-spraying operations began yesterday in Laksi district and other parts of Bangkok in a bid to reduce PM2.5 levels around schools and major routes such as Chaeng Watthana Road and Vibhavadi Rangsit Road.

Pralong Damrongthai, director-general of the Pollution Control Department (PCD), blamed the pollution on air stagnation air and lower rainfall during the seasonal transition.

Bangkok residents can expect a brief respite today as drizzle, forecast to douse the capital, should reduce PM2.5 levels.

Most PCD air-monitoring stations yesterday showed PM2.5 levels exceeding the 50 µg/m³ reference point deemed a health hazard for vulnerable groups. As of 5pm, the highest PM2.5 level was recorded on Kanchanaphisek Road in Bang Khunthian district, with 80µg/m³.

Central Bangkok also suffered worrying levels of air pollution on Monday. The PCD air-monitoring station next to Lumpini Park, a green oasis in the heart of the city, recorded a PM2.5 level of 67 µg/m³.

Other parts of Bangkok with high levels of PM2.5 haze were Bang Khen, Bang Kholaem, Bang Khunthian, Bang Phlat, Bang Rak, Bang Sue, Bangkok Noi, Bung Kum, Chatuchak, Din Daeng, Khlong San, Klong Toey, Laksi, Pathumwan, Phasi Charoen, Phaya Thai, Samphan Thawong, Sathon, Thon Buri, Wang Thong Lang and Yannawa, districts.

Unsafe levels were also detected in Nonthaburi's Bang Kruai and Pak Kret districts, Pathum Thani's Klong Luang district, Samut Prakan's Muang and Phra Pradaeng districts, Samut Sakhnon's Krathum Baen and Muang districts, and Nakhon Pathom's Muang district.

As of 5pm, Bangkok had the world's worst air quality among major cities, according to data from IQAir AirVisual, behind Vietnam's Hanoi and Chengdu in China.

At just 1/20 the diameter of a human hair, the microscopic PM2.5 dust penetrates deep into lungs, from where it enters blood vessels, leading to respiratory and cardiovascular disease. The dust is emitted by industrial activity, vehicle exhaust, and open burning.

Toxic smog covers greater Bangkok

https://www.bangkokpost.com/thailand/ge ... er-bangkok

Fine dust was at unsafe levels in most of greater Bangkok on Tuesday morning, the exceptions being Bangkok's Bang Na and Phaya Thai districts and six districts in adjacent provinces.

The Pollution Control Department reported on Tuesday morning that particulate matter 2.5 micrometres and less in diameter (PM2.5) was between 40-81 microgrammes per cubic metre of air over the past 24 hours - and in most of greater Bangkok was at unsafe levels exceeding 50mcg.

The worst level of 81mcg was measured beside Charansanitwong Road in Bang Phlad district of Bangkok.

Safe levels, 42-50mcg, were reported in Bang Na and Phaya Thai districts of Bangkok, Pak Kret district of Nonthaburi, Khlong Luang district of Pathum Thani, Bang Sao Thong and Muang districts of Samut Prakan, Muang district of Samut Sakhon and Muang district of Nakhon Pathom.

The 42mcg level was in Muang district of Nakhon Pathom.

The PM2.5 pollution was not much different from conditions on Monday, the Pollution Control Department said.

It attributed the accumulated air pollution to stagnant air and high air humidity.

It is not as bad where I am today, mainly due to some surface wind shifting it.

Toxic Bangkok air has Bt700-800m healthcare price: K-Research

https://www.nationthailand.com/news/30376929

As Bangkok residents prepare for another winter of toxic air, a Kasikorn Research Centre (K-Research) report on Tuesday warned of the monetary cost of the pollution.

A preliminary estimate by K-Research found the opportunity cost to the health of those affected by Bangkok pollution will reach Bt700-800 million if the situation persist for the two weeks of September 28 through October 12.

Additional impacts on tourism and related businesses as not yet clear, according to the Centre.

Citing data from Aqicn.org, K-Research estimated that the air pollution could escalate to be more serious than was experienced earlier this year.

According to the report, on September 30 the PM2.5 level in some areas of Bangkok reached 202 micrograms per cubic metre (µg/m3).

Emissions from vehicles combining with stagnant area has resulted in several areas of greater Bangkok remaining covered in a fine PM2.5 particulate dust, the report noted.

The World Health Organisation sets the safety limit of PM2.5 at 25µg/m3, while Thailand doubles the safety limit to 50µg/m3.

K-Research said they would monitor the situation and regularly update their estimates.

This must be the same clown that thinks running a stationary boat in the water will clear a flood. Maybe they are going to fit each kid with a backpack and breathing mask attached to the filter. But it wont be needed soon as the giant towers will filter the air that the water spraying misses! Actually, it is very sad that so called adults can openly come up with crap like this.
………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………
Air filters for schools as city haze worsens

https://www.bangkokpost.com/thailand/ge ... ze-worsens

The Ministry of Education will deliver the first batch of air purifiers to 37 state schools in Bangkok and its vicinity within next two weeks, as part of the government's latest bid to combat the rising levels of ultra-fine PM2.5 pollutants blanketing the city.

"Luckily, most schools are now on a break, so [the haze] impact is quite limited. However, this situation is likely to return when the winter comes, so we need to prepare measures in advance," Kraiserm Tohtubtiang, secretary to the Education Minister, told the media on Tuesday at a press briefing to unveil the air purifier.

The ministry has ordered the Office of the Vocational Education Commission (Ovec) to produce 10,000 low-cost air purifiers and distribute them to schools in dust-vulnerable areas.

The air purifiers, which cost up to 2,000 baht per unit, come in three types -- a water-based unit, a unit with a PM2.5 filter inside, and air purifier for cars.
"Once the air purifiers have been delivered and tested, we will call on other government agencies to place orders with Ovec," he said.

In a related development, The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) has announced plans to install an air purification tower in central Bangkok.

Chatree Watanakhajorn, director of the BMA's Environment Department, said on Tuesday the first tower will be placed near the Siam BTS station sometime this month.

If the giant air purifier proves effective, more will be installed across Bangkok, he said.

A private firm and Kasetsart University jointly proposed the tower, priced at 5.3 million baht.( :D )

If the tower, which is about four metres high and 1.5 metres wide and weighs about 200 kilogrammes, proves capable of reducing the haze pollution, the BMA will ask companies, department stores and organisers of large gatherings to also place towers on their premises.

The structure can purify air over an area of 1,000 square metres.

Should more towers be installed, they will be erected in 24 busy areas including Ratchaprasong intersection, Asok intersection, Central Department Store at Lat Phrao, Ari BTS station, Chatuchak, Chong Nonsi, Phrom Phong, Phloenchit and Victory Monument stations.

Mr Chatree added that the BMA is also looking to buy six water spraying trucks to reduce haze. City Hall is now waiting for funding to be approved by the city council.

If and when the move is given the green light, specifications for the trucks will be drafted.

At 8am on Tuesday, Bang Phlat district recorded the highest PM2.5 level in the city at 81 microgrammes per cubic metre (µg/m³), well above the 50 µg/m³ maximum safe level.

Now that does surprise me. Granted it wasn't as bad as the day before, but having travelled yesterday from Thonglor to Swampy, to Sukhumvit, to Sathon and finally back to Thionglor, I can honestly say it was all pervasive. In fact, my sister, who with her husband, we had picked up at Swampy, was so concerned on the drive back from the airport, just as dusk was hitting, to ask about masks.

But I agree, it's not everywhere and it kind of helps if you have a longer view other than being impeded by buildings.

Looking out of the condo right now, it's still there, but it is noticeably better than yesterday, I can even see some blue sky! But the buildings in the distance are clearer.
