BBQ grill gas, US vs Thailand

Post by migrant »

I'm going to be shipping a container from the US in April and was thinking of buying a gas grill to include. The same type grill here is 2-2.5 times the price in the states and the variety there is huge.

But the gas. In the US we use propane but I don't believe that is readily available here. Would the gas we use for cooking work in one? Would it burn less hot/more hot?

Any ideas/experiences?

Thanks!

So what did you decide Migrant ? Do you think it’s worth shipping one over ?

Still thinking about it. With my luck I would bring one over with a conversion kit and the hookup wouldn't fit anything here.

But knowing Thai ingenuity It could be made to work.

If you look at the grills at Lowes.com, and their prices, compared to here, I probably will

The cooking gas in Thailand, LPG, is like in most places a mixture of Propane and Butane in around 70:30 ratio.
The burning will depend on the type of jets or hole size if they are a tube type burner. Probably not a problem.
The fittings and the regulator may well have different type threads, but could easily be changed as a complete assembly. Spare parts including burner jets may not be available or a different thread size. Control valves and knobs will not fit.

For me I would pay a bit more and buy a local unit, but there are many of them, not all good quality, so shop around a bit and only buy from one of the specialist suppliers.

I bought mine at The Barbecue Store in Bangkok. Their local dealer at the time was Hafelle, probably still is. Like Migrant, I found prices in Thailand a LOT more expensive than comparable units in the US. An advantage to visiting their store in Bangkok rather than using the local distributor is that they had units with cosmetic defects available in Bangkok for a substantial discount. The one I bought had a defect that was barely noticeable to the human eye, for about 20% discount.

Yes this is my concern. I can get a converter kit in the states that will work, but the hook ups, thread sizes, etc I don't know about. I know anything can be jerryrigged here but gas worries me.

I found this place which seems the best prices around. May be venturing to BKK and follow Scouts lead also.

One of the most important items is the gas pressure regulator. Bottle pressure is around 100 psi and the regulator reduces that to less then 1 psi. So everything down stream from the regulator is pretty safe, but all regulators are not created equal! It should have a "flash back" check valve in it, and some of the better ones also have an automatic shut off valve that closes when the flow stops after turning off all the burners.
Gas threads are supposed to be left hand, and there are also both low and high pressure types of regulators. You must not use a high pressure regulator on an LPG bottle.

I think you all have convinced me to pay the higher price for one in Thailand.

Thanks!!
