I will, but it sounds as though chaspul is already doing it. I've got to renew in 2 weeks anyway, so I'll check then. A pretty scary thought though - looking around, every car 10 years and old has basically no insurance worth the paper its written, if they have any insurance at all.

NO, that is why I suggested that you check with Matt. There are different classes of insurance, and absolutely no reason at all to drive around with no insurance. Also, different companies MAY offer COMPREHENSIVE insurance for older cars.

You also should check and see what the maximum amount of any one claim is. I have posted about this previously. The default amount for PROPERTY damage is usually 1 Million Baht. Have an accident and be liable for the write off a 5 Million Baht Benz, and you will be well and truly out of pocket! For less than 100 Baht / Million the covered amount can be increased to what ever you want. My car is nearly as old as me and I cannot buy comprehensive cover, BUT I have
5 Million Baht property cover against damaging other cars. This subject needs its OWN thread!

If your vehicle is still running well pay the insurance cheaper than changing the car

My cars are insured with AXA and they gave 1st class insurance on my older car until it reached 17 years old when it dropped to 2nd class.

Today's inspection results. It actually looks quite thorough. I'm amazed that some vehicles I've seen on the road actually pass. Oh, wait, this is Thailand. Not surprised at all.

Caused me to look at the small print of my MSIG comprehensive (1st class) policy. Obtained through AA insurance last July, the car's tenth anniversary as I took delivery on my 56th Birthday.

5 million property, (should cover any Benz) 10 million personnel damage per accident.

MSIG also provide a mainly free telephone accident, breakdown service, car hire, hotel room, vehicle recovery and also up to 20 litres fuel twice a year!!
All done through an android app, It says that when you phone they can track your GPS position.

Those test results look impressive. Certainly at KC garage, the exhaust is checked, wheel alignment on the rolling road, visual check of the tyres, then the 'mechanic' puts his head through the window and gives a 'thumbs up' to the receptionist dealing with me. That's it. Literally takes a few minutes.

I think that you will find that the rolling road is used to check the brakes. It is a much more complex procedure to check the "wheel alignment", also an entirely different machine.

I stand corrected. They do look for 'drift' (not sure if that's the right terminology) with wheels moving and when applying the brakes. 2 man test.

But then again, I could be completely wrong.

My wife said that the entire procedure which produced the results I posted took about ten minutes.

Thanks for the advice guys - you were spot on :D

I did the deed this morning at the place between 88 and 94 alongside the canal. Arrived at 10:35 and was driving to Market Village at 10:50. Painless. Cost was a massive 200฿.

I've moved away from AA for Insurance (I still rate them the highest) this year as a friend is setting up her own business, and I wanted to help her get started. She insists on doing the tax for her customers, so who am I to argue. The test centre seemed confused that I didn't want tax, but a quick phone call sorted it.

Ah, the test centre do not do tax, only offer to take the book to the DLT and do it for you, at around 100 Baht. Just as they do not do Tor Ror Bor, but can sell you a policy it you want it. The cost of Tor Ror Bor is fixed by the DLT, so everybody pays the same, and several different places that I have used also charge 200 Baht for the inspection.

And a word of warning: if you buy your Tor Ror Bor on a different day to that of when the road tax is due, it may expire BEFORE your next tax renewal.

Tor Ror Bor
I assume you mean proof of paying the compulsory insurance. If so, my insurance and tax renewal is 6 months apart. So when I renew my tax, the slip that is provided with the insurance docs is already 6 months old but has always been accepted.

Or am I, as usual, confused?

Similar to me. My insurance is due September, and my road tax in October. I simply purchase them at the same time. I wouldn't dare drive without insurance, so it's never a problem.

Confusion comes about by saying "insurance". Which insurance? And this can also happen at the inspection station when Somchai asks clueless Farang; "you want insurance"?

I am not sure how it came about, or maybe I have not noticed it before, but the "registration", or as it gets referred to on here, "road tax", on the old Isuzu that actually belongs to my AWOL daughter, is, and always has been, due on the 10th of September. After finding last years renewal to check the due date, I discovered that the Tor Ror Bor(compulsory insurance) expired on the 4th of September. As I do use the bloody thing from time to time, I would have been well and truly in the brown stuff if I had run into and killed someone with expired compulsory insurance. And as I had to drive to the inspection station I was well and truly at risk right there.

In the case of expired and therefore overdue registration, there is a 1% / day fine payable added to the renewal cost.
