Double glazing in Thailand
Does it make sense to instal double glazing windows and doors in Thailand in order to minimise heat gain. Also are the any methods here to insulate the walls when doing a new build? Any useful advice appreciated.
Re: Double glazing in Thailand
A friend of mine built his house with Q-Con wall blocks which are available in Thailand and are supposed to be more efficient in providing insulation. They're more expensive than normal blocks but I don't think it was a prohibitive amount.

As in the west, cavity walls work plus they can be filled with foam insulation. My house was built that way and the interior walls stay very cool. I've been in some 'single skin' houses and the walls can get very hot.
Insulation in the roof is also a must.

Double glazing will help reduce the thermal gain compared to single glazing so they will provide some benefits in reducing temperatures, especially if added with the Q-con blocks as recommended by SteveG and I’ve also read that having the roof insulated with spray foam will reduce internal temperatures by about 3c. As I’m sure you will be aware, double glazing is not widely available but their are companies in Bangkok that supply it, albeit that there’s a price premium over single glazed units. Although I can’t provide any specific advice, I would imagine that the siting of the house in relation to sunrise/sunset could affect the degree of heat gain. The other benefit of double glazing is the reduction in noise pollution - not to be ignored when the locals are having a party late at night!!

Thanks guys

For what it’s worth I’ll add my bit: I've very recently had all windows replaced and I’m pleased I went for double-glazing as noise levels have reduced considerably. Since installation I barely hear two-strokes on the main road, or those irritating birds that squawk loudly over the garden during the night so I’m sleeping better now. I think the rooms are cooler too, but couldn’t say for certain.
Whatever, I’m happy I went for double-glazing, which wasn’t a huge additional cost to the original outlay.
(I would also recommend the firm I used, who did a top job replacing my four French windows and 11 windows. PM me if you’d like more info.)

Redid my windows when I lived in California with double glazed. The noises stopped and thought it well worth while.

Double glazing will help and different glass can allow different amounts of solar radiation through. It is technically called G Value.
I worked for many years in the area of passive building design and a lot can be done by designing houses with the features such as smaller southfacing windows, large roof overhangs for shading, natural ventilation ect.

If you order double glazing, you should ask also for the Argon-Gas, between the glasses. Many companies offering double glazings but without the gas. Some do.

The UPVC double glazing windows and doors make an enormous difference to reduce the indoor temperature and outside noise reduction, this coupled with Qcon blocks and 3 inch over ceiling insulation makes huge electric savings as it keeps air con usage to a minimum. So in our opinion double glazing is definitely worth considering.
