FA back Rooney over Fifa appeal

The Football Association have confirmed they will back Wayne Rooney in the striker's plea of innocence over the red card he received in England's World Cup quarter final defeat to Portugal.
What's the bladdy point? :D Or will they arrange a replay.

The FA achieved a turnover last year of GBP 200m thanks to sponsors and TV rights, making England the world’s richest footballing nation.
So to all those of you who say that money guarantees success. :P It sure can help *see Chelsea* but it guarantees nothing, as we've seen with England (WC failure) & Chelsea (European cup failure). Goodness knows how many millions RM have spent in the last 6 years & have diddly-squat to show for it. :D

It's not Sven the Imposter's fault he is incompetant and gets paid 4 million quid a year - its the people who employed him! It's the guys in the FA who have now employed Sven's sidekick MacLaren, another laughable joke!

If I was asked to be the England manager and was paid 4 million for the pleasure, would I turn it down? Of course not! If I then did a crap job as I most certainly would, whose fault would it be? The twats that employed me of course!

Jockey, of course you are absolutely right. But once the appointment has taken place, all us punters can do is see what team is picked and how they play, whereby all we can then do is comment on the manager.

My preference for Sven's replacement, in order, would have been:-

1) Mourinho
2) Scolari
3) O'Neill
4) The manager of my local pub team
5) Donald Duck
6) Steve McLaren

I noticed that MacLaren's first game in charge was supposed to be against Turkey in August, I think.
From what I've read, that seems very unlikely to go ahead as Turkey are falling foul of FIFA for some reason. Is this right?

I think it's Greece actually. Yes, there are problems apparently. They've fallen foul of FIFA (who doesn't?) so it looks like it'll be cancelled and also the Greek teams who qualified for the Champions League and UEFA Cup look like being forced to withdraw.

I can understand the annoyance of the Greeks when you look at all the teams that have represented and been controlled by authoritarian regimes at major tournaments down the years and not been banned. The eastern bloc countries are the most obvious examples but there are also the likes of Iraq, North Korea etc.

My point is you will always be lumbered with bad decisions until the people who make them are fired.

But for one reason or anotter, the people running the FA have changed a few times recently. Remember the bloke that went not long ago cos he was found to be spit-roasting that lady secretary with Sven? :D

The decision to appont Sven was correct, the fact that he was allowed to stay on & even given a pay raise after his double dealings were made public was wrong.

I'm no big football buff, but would have still have wanted England to win. I don't really care now and certainly won't wait up tonight. Maybe just for the final if I'm drunk enough.
Anyway, enough of my football pedigree. You all seem to be blaming SGE, when it seems inescapable to me that the football authorities in England should shoulder most of it.
Any manager, anywhere, takes the heat, but sometimes "The Board" do actually "encourage" them into making decisions for commercial reasons.
I suppose my question to you all is "how free a hand in team selection do you really think SGE had?"
This isn't an apology for the team or the manager, just a simple question and I'm sure some of you have touched upon it over the course of this thread.
Oh yes, and the question may also involve the great British media and the advertising pound that I saw mentioned on another thread. That comment was shot down in flames. Pity for that.
Just interested.

If this is confirmed as positive, under World Football Federation rules, paragraph 6 sub section 2e,Portugal will forfeit the quarter final match and England will play France in the Semi Final on Wednesday.

I think England has an identity crisis. How would you describe their style of play? Look at the Italians and the Argentinians, world renowned for their defensive qualities. France and Brazil for their flair and attacking qualities. Now look at England - what could you say? Cautious is the best way to describe them! Dull - oh so dull.

It's the people who appoint the manager who are mostly to blame. They seem more interested in PR and keeping a conservative image than allowing a radical manager to stamp a new style and approach into the team. I suspect they are fearful of the type of man England really need, why I do not know. Perhaps they are masons and it takes a funny handshake to get the job? Whatever, it goes way back to the non appointment of Brian Clough.

To appoint Maclaran over Scolari, Morinho, and O'Neill is laughable! Scolari would have taken the job after the world cup, i.e. now, but understandably did not want to undermine the Portugese team by making an announcement before or during the world cup. Morinho was never approached and O'Neill was turned down!

If they had wanted to give the job to an Englishman, Sam Allerdyce or Curbishly would have been the obvious choice of appointments, but I believe an international manager needs different type of skills than a club manager. I really don't think it is necessary for an international manager to have managed a club, (Jackie Charlton didn't do too badly with the Republic of Ireland and Klinnsman with Germany). Get the people in charge of the FA right and England might come good. Until then, expect a cautious approach, a good image, lots of hype and unrealistic expectations before every major championship, (not forgetting - big disapointment).

Big Jack promoted Middlesborough to the 1st Division and narrowly missed doing the same with Sheffield Wednesday if I remember correctly ??
