A police panel set up to solve traffic problems has proposed the increase of speed limits on expressways and motorways to be in line with the current situation.

Ekkarak Limsangkat, who heads the working group on traffic problems, said the panel has agreed to increase the speed limits on expressways and motorways to between 100 and 110 kilometres per hour.

The speeds are currently capped at 80 km/h on expressways and 90 km/h on motorways under the 1979 Land Transport Act and 1992 Highway Act.

The laws are outdated and need amendments as the safety of roads and vehicles have been improved, said Pol Maj Gen Ekkarak, who also is the chief of the Special Branch Bureau's Division 5.

The proposal will be forwarded to the police chief and then the cabinet.

Pol Maj Gen Ekkarak said the proposed new speed limits will not lead to more accidents as police will strictly enforce them, with the aid of new technology. (really! they cannot enforce the existing limit)

Thailand's road mortality rate is among the world's highest. The death rate per 1,000 people was 32.7, the highest in Southeast Asia, according to the recently released Global Status Report on Road Safety of the World Health Organization.

I saw this on a.n.other forum. Speed limit on motorways is currently 120 (pretty much the same as the 70 mph in the UK). So this guy who heads up a group on traffic problems doesn't even know the current limits. They're recommending an increase on speed limits to less than what it is now. For motorways anyway.

Depends on which "motorways" they are referring to. The Intercity (7) (9) are mostly 120, but many of the older "expressways" are still 80. Not that the limits are observed!

The problem is not the vehicles or the roads, it's, as we all know, the drivers, They can't handle their vehicles at 60km per. hr., let alone 120. Another good reason to stay home.

The elevated portion of the Bagna-Trad expressway has been 80 all the way from Chonburi to the city since the day it opened in the 90's. If they ever attempt to change the digital signs it may cause a massive short circuit! The traffic underneath on the old highway goes faster than that, with the added fun of being able to get airborne when going over poorly designed klong bridges. Pete

I've travelled a fair way around Thailand, and I've only encountered 2 small stretches with 120 limit. One stretch is on the Pattaya to Bangkok section, and the other just North of Bangkok. Did the other person say where the 120 limit was in force?

I've done some searches and everywhere I look the regulation seems to be the same. That is 90 kms outside the city except on motorways where the speed limit is 120. There are some new signs on the Chonburi motorway giving different speed limits on different lanes. e.g. the two rightmost lanes are 120 reducing in speed in the left lanes.

Trips to the airport show multiple speed signs of 120. As far as I know, there are only two main motorways in Thailand and both of them are set at 120.

In reality, it doesn't matter what speed limits are set, the speed of the traffic will not alter.

Maybe that's where the confusion is i.e. I see a 3 lane road with a hard shoulder, and think motorway. Thais probably call that something else, and there are in fact only 2 Thai motorways.

You are correct however about speed limits not affecting the speed the traffic will travel at.

Get in a taxi in Bangkok and the driver will ask you: "go highway"?!

I always drive 120 or more, of course if possible. At 60 I fall asleep.
