Does anybody know what these are?
Does anybody know what these are?
I've been at the National Indoor Stadium for a few days. Outside, there are loads of these trees planted. I'd seen the fruits, and without looking probably assumed they were coconuts. However, these are definitely not palm trees. Does anybody know what they are? Nice flowers as well. Are they edible?

Re: Does anybody know what these are?
I'm told it's something like 'madua' in Thai, but I'm not convinced by the photos that come up. It looks like a 'butter tree', whatever that is!
This is the way
Re: Does anybody know what these are?
We have one in our yard BB and later on I'll post a photo and ask the wife if she knows what it is. You can eat nothing on it at all from what I was told before. It's a weird tree as it will drop all of its leaves in one night, and then begin to bud again the next day. I thought it was sick but there are 2-3 others in our village and they all do the same thing. I think ours has 3 complete cycles in one year. Stay tuned.....Pete

I read that the fruit is edible but not usually eaten by people because of it's smell.
Durian comes to mind and that gets eaten so should taste wonderful for the Thais!

Re: Does anybody know what these are?
Helpful idea of a thread, so I'll keep it going.
Saw this tree on May 1 by a reservoir near to Pak Thong Chai. Couldn't get right up to it though because of fencing. I've never seen a tree like it and it was covered in red fruit, I estimate to be the size of an apple. I asked elsewhere and someone suggested figs? So does anyone have a definitive answer to what the fruit of this mature tree are?

Mrs BB says it is a Mag Dua Tree (very expensive fruit), Unfortunately I've spelt it as I heard it, but nothing comes up on Google.

มะเดื่อ is the Thai spelling, and that is translated as figs in my dictionaries despite being nothing like the European figs.
Re: Does anybody know what these are?
Thanks for the quick replies. So figs, of a sort, they are - and edible. No wonder it was fenced off. It really was an impressive sight.

I believe there are some growing opposite the Hut bar in soi 80. Certainly some of the girls went across the road fruit-picking and came back munching on fruits that looked remarkably similar to those. I tried one but wasn't particularly impressed.
