If the waves are 'crazy' the ferry won't sail, or will turn around.

Really, that explains all the boat accidents around Thailand.

I guess a boat/ferry can "turn around" in more than one way... :(

Hmm? Waves are caused by the transfer of wind energy to areas of OPEN water, such as the ocean, lakes and dams. By definition, if there is no wind there are no waves! (disregarding outlets of estuaries, rivers and tides, that may cause local "waves")

A swell is a different animal that is generated by wind a long way away and travels through the warter. Waves can and do appear on top of a swell. Ocean forecasts usually include both swell and wave predictions.

It is a complex exercise to accurately predict wave heights which take into account many other factors. But one of the most important factors is what is termed "fetch", which means how far the wind has travelled over the open warter.

Which, in simple terms, means that the wind in the Gulf of Thailand may only have a very short "fetch", compared with the "fetch" on the Andaman sea, that could be blowing all the way from the Middle East, but definitely from the Indian continent. But I have yet to meet any "crazy waves" when there is no wind. :thumb:

Wind or no wind you would not get me on that ferry today for anything.

The crazy waves we had was on the ferry to Kho Samet, with waves coming over the top. Another tourist asked if they would turn around and was told no. Many people had life jackets on including us but there were not enough for everyone. Wife and kids have never been on a boat again.

Less than two years after it opened with much fanfare, a ferry connecting the resort towns of Hua Hin and Pattaya has been suspended, a tourism official said Thursday.

Citing financial losses and low monsoon season ticket sales, provincial tourism official Orasa Awutkhom announced the service would resume Nov. 1.

“It’s currently a period of decreased tourism, or low season, so there are very few customers,” Orasa said. “Therefore, the company has halted its service from Sept. 20 to Oct. 31.”

Hmmm. See my note in "Thailand Calendar" about the Chinese Autumn Festival. They may not have fully thought through their service suspension. Pete

HaHa, it was still in my mind to use the service Saturday for the footie - I won't bother now. They've made my mind up for me.

If the service is suspended for 5 weeks, I wonder what happens to the crew/shore side staff.

If it has financial losses it may not resume without a government subsidy.

I just wonder what spin TAT can put on this? With the figures of tourist arrivals coming toThai that they put out, every business in the tourists towns should be doing well. IMO the ferry would be making as much money as almost all businesses in HH. NOTHING or worse. You only have to listen to business owners.

What is your guess? Mine is that this is a face-saving way of shutting it down.

Another report from Bangkok Post https://www.bangkokpost.com/news/genera ... til-oct-31

If it is really down to the weather conditions, coupled with the high winds in January and February each, it does seem to have been an ill thought out venture.

Really? They do not know the difference between North East and South West! But maybe that is why the Thai Met Dept keep getting it wrong.
