^Actually, that was for a weekend departure, I've just done another search and leaving midweek, you can get a direct flight with Thai for 601gbp.

I think you got lucky, I look quite regularly and they are still in 'insane' category. I flew LHR-BKK ONE WAY business class £1900 three weeks ago - which was about £500 cheaper than everyone else - even economy was pushing a grand!
I've just had a quick look and you can get an economy return from Heathrow for mid-September starting from 604gbp with Gulf Air and direct with Thai for about 800.
Prices are always more expensive in July/August but then go back to more “reasonable” prices, albeit more expensive then they ever used to be.

Travel in August and you’ll pay double.

I think that is a myth that no longer applies since when you book, its two separate tickets with two separate prices so you'll get the same prices (and more flexibility) by booking singles.

I am planning a trip back next year in spring to avoid the El Niño hot season here and prices are still sky high (double pre-Covid), even booking eight months in advance.

We're planning a trip back to the UK in October and I had a look at prices this morning.

Emirates were approx 30K THB return to Stansted.

That's a reasonable price, that same flight is over 60K THB in April/May according to Skyscanner.

We paid 31,754 baht each for return to Frankfurt last April, Qatar outbound, TA back. Luggage included.
Seems prices haven't changed much.

^30,000bt is under 700gbp so it's a pretty reasonable deal.
Basically I've been flying between Europe and Thailand 4-5 times a year for the past 20 years, apart from Covid and if I pay less than 800 euros, I'm happy.

Of course before we lambast the airlines too much, a significant part of the cost will be due to the UK government wanting a huge chunk for daring to want a holiday after being taxed to death the rest of the year !

eg - my one way ticket to BKK-LHR (BC) £1250 - coming back £1900 !! Looking on HMRC website the tax take for the greedy bastards is £554! So it's not the airlines screwing you over

Not sure it matters too much who’s screwing who, the bottom line is how much you have to pay, rather than whose pocket it goes into?

On August 27th I had a flight from BKK at 6pm. I have never seen so many people in the immigration queue, even before Covid. It took me an hour from the beginning of baggage control to the end of passport control. Only every second counter was occupied. Luckily I arrived at the airport early enough.

We went thru Swampy on August 24th heading to KL with Malaysian Airlines. Arrived a good 3 hours before departure went to check in baggage which took over an hour( we were 12th in line) as staff were new recruits under training.
Heading to the escalators for what was mayhem up at the security screening area we got pulled out of the queue and told to head way down to the far end of the building where we found an express screening and passport counter and we were thru in a couple of minutes. One of the advantages of having grey hair !
BTW, Thai Airways will be flying out of Perth direct to BKK by Xmas according to the local airport management.
Fingers crossed.

Don't forget old codgers (like me at 82) that if your 70 or older you can use Fast Track or "Priority" lines at Immigration. May have to walk a bit to find it but will breeze through quickly.

I arrived back from the UK this morning and immigration arrivals was the quietest I can remember - I didn’t wait even 30 seconds to see the Imm Officer. Had to wait about 10 minutes for my case and then dodge through Customs - for whatever reason they we’re pulling over lots of people to have their bags x-rayed - probably less than 1 in 10, but fortunately not me, so my goodies passed through ok.
The roads were also unusually quiet so from a scheduled 6.00 am arrival, I reached my villa a few minutes before 9.00 am.
