Merit Making For my Wife's 60th Birthday

Post by Big Boy »

Every year my wife does the same thing on her birthday to make merit in the eyes of Buddha. She goes to the temple, and showers the monks with gifts, and in return they shower her head with water. This year she was discussing what she was going to do with neighbours, when somebody suggested a trip to what I assumed was the Pala-U Refugee Camp.

One of the neighbours had heard they urgently needed underwear. A whip round amongst the neighbours, and somebody bought an assorted bundle of children’s underwear in Bangkok for 7,000 Baht.

Anyway the 4th July came and we set out for this place in Pala-U in convoy. 3 pickups and a SUV carrying 21 of us. We were later joined by a Nissan March carrying another 2.

The underwear was carried in the SUV. In the back of one of the pickups were the 2 largest insulated tubs of ice-cream I’d ever seen, a couple of sacks of chicken pieces, a sack of noodles, a sack of crisps, a sack of sweetie bars etc – I think you get the idea.

Well, the journey to Pala-U was uneventful, then we went offroad. We must have gone a further 20 miles over one of the roughest roads I’ve been on. I was rear gunner in the convey, and I had to eat the other 3 vehicle’s dirt as I drove through the red dust. My blue car is now a rusty red colour. I was very grateful that we had sunshine – this area has had a lot of rain recently. Ironically, Hua Hin where it rarely rains, had an almighty downpour in our absence.

Although dry on this journey, there were quite a few run off ditches that had formed in the road, making for a very bumpy ride. The back end of my truck actually slid sideways 3 time, and I started thinking how grateful I was that I was driving a truck as opposed to a mere car. Imagine my surprise when the little Nissan March turned up later. On the way home, the little car left the rest of us for dead. I don’t know if this was good or stupid driving.

We turned left, drove through a rubber plantation and we were there – nor a refugee camp but a school. I’m still not sure where we were, but we must have been very close to Burma. The teachers wore the uniform of Border Police. So we were at quite a nice looking school in beautiful surroundings – the grounds of the school would leave many Thai schools wanting. However, it seems we were in a very poor area of Thailand.

We parked outside the dining hall, and the vehicles were unloaded. The 3 regular dinner ladies stood back, and our entourage started preparing food for the kids – I went for a quick wander around the grounds.

The school had its own hospital block.

It also had quite a vibrant market garden, which included a hen house with many laid eggs, a goose house, a fish farm with loads of edible sized fish, and plenty of of garden produce.

I wandered back to the dining hall, where food preparation was going very strong. 3 huge saucepans on large improvised gas cookers. Our team of volunteers preparing the dishes conveyor belt style. One putting in noodles, then the green stuff, then the congealed blood, a lump of chicken etc.

I took a look outside, and there was the first wave of kids coming down the hill – 62 very young kids (probably under 5). At the entrance to the dining hall was placed a saucepan of water, and they all lined up to wash their hands in this saucepan – no soap, just hands in the water. Commendable for the first couple, but I reckon the last 50 were washing their hands in dirty hands soup.

These kids were great, small dishes were place in front of each of them, but they just sat there, still and quiet. The teacher said something, and they all sang what I assume was a thank you prayer before starting their food. They ate their food, cleared away their own dishes, and then queued up for an ice-cream – still very quiet. Ice creams in hand, they were then given some rambuttan (sp. Little red hairy fruits) and a packet of crisps like things. Now remember these kiddies are barely 5 years old – it was quite funny watching them to carry their booty, and eat an ice-cream at the same time. It reminded me of the old TV programme Crackerjack where prizes were awarded, but you couldn’t drop anything. Some of them rolled their booty inside their shirts. Lovely to watch.

We were then left with an empty hall again, and the helpers busily preparing for the next onslaught. While we were waiting, some older girls came, and about 12 take-away meals were carried away by them on trays. I can only guess that food went to the little hospital, although when I looked through the windows, the beds were empty.

Then came the bigger kids. Obviously much larger that the first sitting, but these kids were equally well behaved and good mannered. There were about 200 of them this time. The big difference was that they didn’t have to wash their hands. I could tell that I was in a remote, poorer area because there wasn’t an ounce of excess fat on anybody (young or old) – I guess the nearest 7-11 was an hour away, so no junk food.
Then came the bigger kids.
Then came the bigger kids.
They all sat down, and food was placed in front of each child. They all just sat there. Then one of the bigger lads moved to the end of the table and started giving instructions. Like well drilled troops, they started moving their arms in some sort of ritualistic way, whilst chanting at the same time. This went on for a couple of minutes.

When ritual was over, they started eating. As they finished, they left their seats and got more, and more. When the main meal was over, they started queuing for ice cream (again, there were second helpings available), and they all picked up their fruit and other goodies.

Suddenly, like a whirlwind had hit the place, they cleaned everything. And the dining hall was spotless again.

The kids all lined up, and one of the elder girls stepped forward. I guessed that she was going to thank us, so I asked her if she could talk in English. She obviously understood me but after an embarrassed silence she started her speech in Thai. When she’d finished, they all sang the Koppun song to us saying thank you. They’d all eaten very well, and were truly grateful.

As they broke up, they were going around thanking everybody, and wais were quite prominent. They moved outside, and put their shoes back on and dispersed. This was remarkable in itself. 200 pairs of 2 kinds of shoe. I couldn’t believe that there was no squabbling over who had who’s shoes.

We packed up our things, and we were off. Many of the kids ran out of their classrooms to bid us farewell – absolutely fantastic, and I think we all left with a warm feeling inside feeling that we’d just done something good.

Your’re probably wondering what happened to the underwear. We left that with the teachers to sort out at school closing time. We didn’t feel it appropriate to try fitting various its items of under garments to 260 assorted kids.

On the way home, we popped in to see one our neighbour’s durian farm, but if you’ve seen one durian, you’ve seen them all I’m afraid.

This had been an excellent day, and we agreed that we would do it again next year.

Really good effort and result. :thumb: Obviously a place where you just don't turn up with a few bags of goodies. I imagine someone in your group called ahead to assure how much was needed to feed the whole tribe. A good birthday memory for your wife. :D Pete

We went there about lunch and all th e children were gather at the table and waited for the food,
when the principal adresed me and ask if I would say something  what to do,what to do,ok I put my self together and sang a danish song about remembering what you learn in the school today, and who got the biggest laugh and aplaud of the day ? me
There were enough ice so every one could get 3 times, some of them got one and went back in line for the next one.

We went, with our neighbours, back to the same school run by the Border Police where we had such a fantastic time back in July. I don't know if the kids remembered us, but I had dozens come up to me as I wandered around the school grounds to say hello, give me a little curtsey or bow and a wai. I felt as if I was amongst friends.

I said to Ginjaninja that I'd try to find out if this school was connected to Jungle Aid - I'm sorry GN, but I failed in that quest. However, this is a very worthy cause, and I recorded some of the acknowledgements for donations that were displayed around the grounds.

Inside the dining area, the Thai contingent started cooking lunch for the 250+ kids. As per last time, the main meal was chicken noodles, supplemented by the 2 largest tubs of ice cream and 600 packets of crisps plus a variety of biscuits.

Last time we took enough underwear for all of the kids, which had been requested by the school. This time we took a few bundles of 2nd hand clothes and a few toys. It became very obvious that somebody should have requested socks this time. I hope we do this again, and socks for every one of the kids will be top of my donation list.

As with last time, the kids were absolutely fantastic. Polite, well mannered, well behaved, quiet but most of all, their gratitude was fantastic, to the extent it brought a tear to the eye.
