Investments and Savings

Post by RODSTEWART »

Does anybody know who is offering any decent investment or savings accounts. Five years ago I thought I had made enough for life, getting good rates. Now with the continued recession, another five years and I will be skint. :cuss:

Welcome to the forum Rod!

Suppose the royalties on 'Baby Jane' etc must be dwindling then dude.

However, there are a few financial wizards around on here, maybe they will see the thread and point you to a few options.

Current rates in Australia for term deposits can be found here.

http://www.ratecity.com.au/term-deposits

I know of people who put their investments in their young child's name and state themselves as the trustee, therefore no tax payable.

Was at Siam Commercial Bank this morning, and they are promoting an 11-month, fixed-term rate of 7%.

^ The 7% is only for the last 3 months. (after 4 at 2% then 4 at 3%). I have 3.5% 5 month fixed from BAY which is slightly higher overall and less of a time tie..

3.5%

I really should start my own term deposit business for Hua Hin residents, its quite easy to get 7% here in Australia. 2% for me, 5% for the client.

Are these accounts taxable? I mean specifically for long term residents who are not in the tax system paying tax already. I've seen the odd account advertised as "tax-free" but not sure what the norm is.

With western economies in decline and the East on the rise, it's going to get worse.

If inflation runs at 10% + your currency devalues another 20%, the value of your assets could be down significantly in 5 years. I would transfer all savings over here to protect against currency movements, move to the village, grow your own food or eat like the Thais do. If you are blowing your cash on Chang, then rein it in. If Thais can live off 4000 a month, so can we.

Or enter into some kind of cooperative arrangement with friends who are in a similar position. Advertise. Pool your income and rent a big place. I've seen it done in Portugal. Shave first and dab a bit of polish on your flip-flops, so they know you are clean-living and of good character. If you are still listening to the Bay City Rollers you're on your own.

Another option is to tread the spiritual boards. Join the Brahma Kumaris and/or live in an Ashram. It's good for the soul, you'll lose a few pounds around the middle and others will be drawn by your saintly aura. The Paisley socks will have to go. White is mandatory.
