On the wagon

Post by buksida »

The final hurdle has been cleared and I am now approaching the end of a month off the sauce. Living in Thailand one is surrounded by a multitude of temptations, one of the greatest is a nice cold bevvie or two. Everyone has their own drinking habits and I'm usually a weekend warrior, abstaining during the week when I'm at work and making up for it over the weekend.

In recent months I've noticed a few changes following excessive consumption of these fermented vegetable products - none of them too pleasant so I decided to abstain for a while. Partly for health reasons, partly because I was becoming a twat on the sauce, and partly to see if I could.

The hardest bit has been the weekends when a cold beer to relax in a nice setting would have gone down a treat. Blended carrot juice just doesn't hit the spot the same way.

There have been a couple of observations I've made during this little experiment:

1) I have trouble sleeping and am now going to bed later and getting up earlier. I guess the body needs that alcohol fueled daze to make it shut down properly!

2) Physical activities are easier, no more getting tired as fast and doing a workout is actually quite easy now that there are no more toxins floating around in my blood stream.

3) You enjoy seeing other people with a hangover and begin to forget what it actually feels like!

4) All people in general are complete twats after a few brews.

5) Your senses improve, especially the ones relating to smell and beer.

I've added a little poll as it may be interesting to see the drinking habits of others - of course you hardened beer monsters can vote anonymously!

I went through a fairly sustained abstinence earlier this year after my blood pressure was diagnosed as being too high, but have started drinking again but not as much as before. Although I have voted three or four times a week, that can be anything from 1 beer/couple of glasses of wine at home to a night out lasting several hours. I play darts most Tuesdays and having a few drinks is part and parcel of that for me but that rarely gets out of hand. I like to think I am a quite congenial drunk but as with anyone I have been an arsehole in the past and probably will be in the future, although I will always try hard not to be. Apologies to anyone who has encountered me when I have failed in those efforts!

I've put tea total,no other reason but it tastes vile and watching others when they are drunk makes me think i made the right choice,i think everyone should see a video of themselves after a night on the beer
maybe then they would drink less. :)

I may drink 2-3 times a week, but it is almost always athome, and a couple glasses of wine while cooking/eating. Friday night maybe treat myself to a scotch.

In the past I drank more, but with age hangovers and some of the list Buksida made tend to be more priority than drinking, but nevertheless

I used to hop on a wagon for a month once a year for 13 years. Now that I'm not drinking as I used to do when I was a bar owner, I haven't seen the need to do it. It's weekends mainly now and mainly at home. Have to say there were times when I thought it might be a good idea to postpone it, for example, when we did the dragon boat race, I'm sure Buksi, Lomu, barrys, Terry and the rest of you who participated remember.
I usually did the cabbage soup diet for at least a week at the same time, too. Good old days? Hmm, maybe not.

I bet that caused some bubbles in the bath.

Seriously, outside of Thailand, the only time I drink is on very special occassions, or whenever I work away. If we go anywhere at home, I have to drive (what a waste of money getting Mrs BB through her test :cuss: ). It's just easier to go without.

I find most people don't need beer to become complete twats...

As you guys age you're going to see a change in desire concerning drinking as well. I used to be every night, then 3-4 times a week and they were heavy days of at least 4 large bottles. Then went to every weekend. For the past two years or so it's only been about once a month and usually need an excuse such as a get together to be in the proper mood. On those occasions it's not a few though, but many exampled by this past Saturday where the count was up to around 12 large bottles between noon and midnight. The after effects are so terrible for me now though I'm good for another month or so with nothing.

As Buks says, when you start not liking yourself the next day and start feeling physically and mentally unwell after a session, you'll change your habits unless you suffer from being a full fledged alcoholic. Pete

I have to admit that one of the reasons that I divide my time in Thailand between Hua Hin and Issan is because I tend to drink too much when I'm in Hua Hin.
At the moment it isn't really a problem as when I'm there I'm taking a break from work and can afford to party a bit, but if I was living there full time it would definately be a worry.
My professional life means that when I'm working I really can only have a couple of beers a night, so I have a form of enforced disipline to keep me on the straight and narrow normally. (Aviation is one of those industries that tends to ignore weekends, so I don't even have that temptation!)

Teetotal myself. After doing my best for a decade to commit suicide by booze, I woke up far too often not having a clue what I'd done the night before and that scared me. Seeing military colleagues and family members lapse into alcoholism also forced me to take notice, particularly when my wife found her 49 year old father dead in his flat with a bottle of whiskey in his hand. I know it was the middle of winter and he was cold but an extra sweater would have been a smarter idea.

I've gone so long without, now, that just one drink makes me feel lousy. I could probably manage a Jack Coke or Pina Colada with a brolly in it at a push. Or perhaps it's time for a 'Hua Hin Temperance Society'?

A sherbet or two definitely used to improve my Pool arm. My game's definitely gone to pot lately. :?

I must admit I am enjoying the benefits of an alcohol free lifestyle but I do miss a nice cold beer now and then.

Mr P, I don't suppose there is any natural remedy for this, something that does the same as beer but without the after effects?

I have noticed I'm eating a lot more - food is generally not something you indulge in when hungover!
