Restaurants, food, beverage, hawkers, and local markets and suppliers. This is the place for discussion on Hua Hin's culinary options.

Is this a sign of the economic downturn... say it ain't so!

Post by hhfarang »

Just a month ago I was bragging about how good The Original Fish and Chips Restaurant was. I don't go out much at night but I eat out at lunch time at least once a week. Yesterday I went back, mouth watering, just thinking about that fish and chip lunch I was about to have to find the place closed at lunch time. This is the third restaurant in the last month in a half that I've been to for lunch only to find out that they are now only open for dinner.

Is this a sign of the economic times and low tourism and expats staying at home for lunch?

original fish and chip shop

Post by IHF »

went past the Original F & C had a board outside with For Sale or Rent on.

Looks like a bleak High season, most bar/guesthouse owners i have spoken too, say not many bookings at all for the coming months.

Exchange rates/high fuel/ no pensions/savings who can afford to go on holiday anywhere.

Just been passed and closed but no signs at all.

I don't think a place should be closing to regular customers just cos its quiet in the day at the moment. You put a couple of staff in there and take the rough with the smooth.

Right on, SJ; in fact, the last time I ate there there was only one staff and she was the owner's sister-in-law.... and she did a fine job both cooking and serving! :thumb:

Thanks SJ,

Have tried it at YOBT and was unimpressed. Maybe it was an off day. I'll try Jimmy's as Soi 102 isn't far from my house.

Richard has been out of hospital for about 5 days. He's still recovering. He told me the problem was rat pee infecting his blood.

I guess you're being serious about the 'rat pee' bit Jockey, and it reminded me of my early days here. My Thai friends told me to never drink something straight from a can (or bottle). Either get a straw, or pour it into a glass. This isn't fear-factor stuff, it's just that most of the storage depots and/or shops have rats running all over the place. When a rat's gotta go, a rat's gonna go - on the bottles and cans. You very rarely see a Thai drinking straight from a container.

I always thought that white dog-shite was a sign of economic times.
I think we'll be standing on quite a bit of it over the next few years in Thailand!
