As Terry has already said, the official date for the long-boat races is 3 November. The races take place from 9 a.m., with the final at around 5 p.m.

At last week's training session, we agreed to meet at 1 p.m. every Sunday at Mermaid Cruises Pier to get the Crazy Falang Team into some sort of shape.

So far, so good - we didn't capsize the boat. :)

We even managed to complete the 500 m course against the current on our first attempt - can't be bad :D

Still need a few more paddlers, though.

If anyone else is interested, just let us know.

BTW, Mermaid Cruises finally has an office phone no. - can actually get ADSL in Pak Nam Pran now.

So, how many of us are on for tomorrow? I know a couple are away for this week. We've still got quite a few coming, haven't we? OK, I'll come clean, I don't want to have to try & move that monster of a boat with only barrys to help me! However, if I get the chicken curry to myself...yum

See you (all) tomorrow

Another practise session behind and this time it did feel like practise. We had only half crew and did a longer trip than last time. Anyways, the boat glided nicely on the river and we are a bit more experienced again. This time we did have an extra practise of getting the boat into water and then back on the ground again.
Cheers everone, it was, as always, good fun.

Definitely more taxing than last time, as BG said, but great fun! :D Weather fantastic today, which may have made it harder, paddling in the heat. However, on our second run of the day, we actually did the 500m course. In 2 mins 45 sec! :thumb:
That may not sound good, but the local champions do it in 1 min 30 sec. This is only our 2nd practice & we only had half a team. Pretty, bl**dy good, IMHO!!
Sanuk mak! Our coach is great! Barrys hospitality wonderful as usual. The only way to spend a Sunday afternoon! :D

When the weather is fine you know it's the time
For messin' about on the river
If you take my advice there's nothing so nice
As messin' about on the river
There's big boats and wee boats and all kinds of craft
Puffers and keel boats and some with no raft
With the wind in your face there's no finer place
Than messin' about on the river

There are boats made from kits that'll reach you in bits
For messin' about on the river
And you might want to skull in a glass fibred hull
Go messin' about on the river
Anchors and tillers and rudders and cleets
Ropes that are sometimes referred to as sheets
With the wind in your face there's no finer place
Than messin' about on the river

Skippers and mates and rowing club eights
All messin' about on the river
Capstans and quays where you tie up with ease
All messin' about on the river
Outboards and inboards and dinghis you sail
The first thing you learn is the right way to bale
In a one man canoe you're both skipper and crew
Messin' about on the river

Moorings and docks, tailors and locks
All messin' about on the river
Whirlpools and weirs that you must not go near
Messin' about on the river
Backwater places all hidden from view
Mysterious wee islands just waiting for you
So I'll leave you right now, go cast off your bow
Go messin' about on the river

A bunch of ol' twatts behaving like pratts
All messin' about on the river
In a Dragon Boat we be with no time to pee
Still messin' about on the river :o
To lose in round one is the name of the game
Without any effort and maybe no pain
We retire to the stands with beer in our hands
And THEN we can pee in the river :thumb:

Good luck with your training over the next month. We're off to Blighty tomorrow. back on Oct 6th, so should be able to rejoin you on the 8th.
I'll try and get fit back home. Certainly, I won't be drinking as much. I'm not allowed to when at my parents!!

That's a great one, Terry, thanks. Have a nice trip, Lomu and try to practise your arm in the various pubs in London so that it won't get too tired when you return. Also remember, it's a different kind of jungle out there.

I've been thinking about the Sunday practices and Barrys hospitality. Last Sunday, Barrys's wife was slaving away in the kitchen, preparing food (including roast potatoes! Yum! ) and only 3 of us, including Barrys stayed to eat the food.
It seems a shame for her to spend so long cooking, for people to leave straight after practice. :| Now, I know that people have obligations & other things to do, but maybe it would be courteous for us all to let Barrys know at the start of each practice if we intend to partake of his wife's delicious food, or not. It would save her cooking for people that won't be there. I think that's only fair, I know I'd be slightly pi$$ed off if I'd done all that cooking for no-one, and she's such a nice lady!

Just a thought...

See you all Sunday  :thumb:

Good idea. I'll still have to skip one more time as I've just started my 3rd and last week with the cabbage soup diet. Also only 8 more days to go and my nose whitening month will be over.

Will be there for the duration today, hopefully with new recruit.
Unfortunately Ted can't make it today as he is back in Taiwan with the missus on a visa run & business. Should be there next week though.

Look forward to seeing you all later.

The 2 team members from our co-sponsor The Evason have also said they'll be here to practise today.

And all the new paddles have arrived to!

I'm going to have to miss today, as I've got a heavy cold & I'm sneezing & wheezing everywhere! Not an attractive sight! And doesn't feel too good, either! :(
Have a good practice & no replacing me with Sean the German Shepherd - I'll be back next week!! :P
Let me know how it went!
