This is a speculative article. In any case it's on about a preview edition, which could easily mean that real releases could be well into 2016. Other articles available on the web have even earlier dates. But there's nothing from MS itself.

The article also points out that some windows 9 features have already been included in Windows 8.1 update 1, and more will be included in update 2 later this year. There's also speculation that win9 might be offered free to win8 users. Maybe win9 will be an evolutionary change rather than revolutionary one.

More proof that W8 is another Windows Millineum, or Windows Vista, a release that is so bad nobody wants it. Seems like every other release (XP, 7, 9?) is the better one where they fix the problems and issues with the in between ones so just go for the odd ones from now on... :D

I've been using Widows 8 for a few months now and I have had absolutely no issues with it, in fact I would say it's probably the best offering from MS.

I read the article and didn't find any proof of anything at all. I also read all the comments after the article and not one anti win8 commenter was able to post any factual data in favour of their point of view. Maybe Win8 wasn't so well received but win8.1 update 1 is an improvement and in my own opinion better than win7. If win9 is a free upgrade I'll probably go with it, but I'm happy with win8.1 so I'm not going to pay for win9.

Thought I remembered there were 2 good versions in a row. There was, but not for consumer versions. 3.11 and 3.1 were both winners. NT 4 and 2000 (internally named NT 5) were also both winners. Professional and business versions noted below with an asterisk.

8 - TBD?

7 - Damn good. Many (but not enough) XP users became converts.

Vista - Was this some kind of joke?

XP - OK at first, became as comfortable and functional as your favorite pair of jeans.

* 2000 - AKA NT 5. The last version for software developers. Good

ME - The horror!

98SE - Good

98 - Bad, because it was the beta version of 98SE

* NT 4. Professional developers needed this to run their tools. Good.

95 - Good

* NT 3.5, 3.51. Far more trouble than it was worth.

* 3.11 (Windows for Workgroups) A knife to the heart of the practice of carrying floppies between workers. Big Win.

3.1 - First version ready for prime time. The business press said it's time to start buying PCs

Janus, I remembered that, but had to look up "Janus is the god of beginnings and transitions"

Wasn't it referred to as sneakernet?

Yes, because the wired version was, and is, called Ethernet.

Microsoft ending mainstream support for Windows 7 in early 2015

Microsoft ending mainstream support for Windows 7 in early 2015.

The inevitable transition to Windows 8 continues unabated. Microsoft published an update on its support site on Tuesday with a list of products reaching the end of their Mainstream Support life cycles in the coming months, including Windows Server 2008, Exchange Server 2010 and most notably, Windows 7 Home, Professional, Starter, Enterprise and Ultimate.

On January 13th, 2015, all of these products and services will be moving to Extended Support, a five year plan which includes regular, free security updates and paid hotfix support. After the deadline, design changes and new features will no longer be considered though. If you’re still using Windows 7, don’t worry — Extended Support isn’t set to end until January 14th, 2020 and Windows 9 should make its debut well before that date.

Although Microsoft has provided an exact date, ZDNet notes that the company pushed back the deadline for Windows XP shortly before extended support was set to expire and in all likelihood, the same thing will happen again, especially considering the widespread popularity of Windows 7 and the general disdain for Windows 8.

If you’d like to see a complete list of products, services and service packs which are either entering extended support or ending support altogether, be sure to check out Microsoft’s latest update on the Microsoft Support page.

All computer users at my company overseas use Windows 8 and there has been very little trouble with it, most people would not go back to an older version, of course a few find it had to get used to the new layout and functions but that is the same with everything new.

Personally I would not go back to an older version of Windows.

Could it be the problems come from using cracked software, or illegal copies?

These figures suggest how it didn't quite hit the heights.

Most amazing stat in the graph? . . . . 3.05% are still using Vista!

Like I said before, it appears that windows 8 is going to go down in history like Windows Millenium or Vista.
