As for being stared at, I am moving back to the heart of California and me walking around with my Thai friend(Not my wife, not my GF) will go completely unnoticed. In fact that is one of the beauties of going back is the cultural diversity in California.
I'll second that. I live in Southern California and it seems as many Asians, and Hispanics, as Whites.

It sounds as if you retired too young, at least for Thailand. I'm 55, have always led a very active lifestyle, but find myself enjoying sitting with a good book more at this age. By the time I reach retirement age I think I can find enough to keep me busy, but 30 years ago maybe not.

I moved to California from first Michigan, then bounced to Maine and back. I didn't, and still am not enamored with, Southern California. Like you I enjoy the lakes, rivers, fishing, etc and Southern California just doesn't have it. I can travel a few hours, but many are crowded, or too far to do regularly.

Anyway I guess I'm saying that everyone is different, and our activities differ.

Good Luck! If your down near Fullerton in Orange County give me a pm, we can share a couple beers, have a few bars around here with more than 100 beers on tap

Sounds good Migrant, I may just do that. I retired at 48 and really have zero regrets doing it. I planned it out very well short of the few unknowns here that I overlooked. No harm no foul. Rather live now when my health is perfect and still have all my faculties then wait until later. My goal is simple, I want to get every penny back from what I put into SS. I am not waiting until older to apply, I will be at the door on the day I turn 62.5. Our govt as you know wants you to wait and die before you use any. HAHA.

My health is my best friend. I plan on taking care of it so I can play another 25 years at least. I will probably buy a place up near Lake Shasta or Trinity Lake on a few acres so I can fish the rivers and waters in the area. Lots of bank owned foreclosed properties to be had there for $80 to $150K USD.

And I agree 100% everyone is different and our activities do differ. Not judging any one. I am glad that some have found life palatable here. Hats off to them and I am glad I came. I learned a ton and now know the basic make up of a person it takes to live in SE Asia for the most part. It just does not fit me, maybe 65+.
